Dragon's Dogma 2 puts heaps of emphasis on its unique gameplay features, such as the Pawn system. From an outside point of view, then, the game is generally just one more ARPG to grind through, but in practice, this couldn't be further from the truth. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the way the game handles boss and mini-boss encounters, which are one of the key pillars of the whole gameplay loop. Quite simply, you climb on top of monsters to slay them.

Note, too, that "climbing" isn't just a one-off cutscene or a finisher you trigger here and there. No no no, it's a fully manual and flexible feature that's in your control all the way through, and if you mess up a climb, well, you've just done and goofed it up then! Down below, we'll explain how not to do that.

How to Properly Climb Monsters in Dragon's Dogma 2?

The key thing to understand about monster climbing in Dragon's Dogma 2 is that it's all about stamina. Stamina is king in this game, and if you run out of it at an inopportune time and your Pawns are far away, you're getting stunlocked at best and absolutely pummeled into the dirt at worst. This is a big deal because as soon as you start climbing a monster in Dragon's Dogma 2, you'll start running out of stamina.

This carries with it two unfortunate implications:

  • By the time you get to a monster's weakspot (usually the head), you won't have enough stamina to dish out meaningful damage
  • The monster will easily shake you off unless you're quick about your business

Further, if you're trying to cut down a flying monster such as a griffin, you're in for a bad time if you run out of stamina while the creature is high up in the air. It's going to shake you off at a moment's notice, and you'll effectively have jumped down a mountain to your immediate death. The good news, then, is that you can minimize the odds of this happening.

Firstly, keep in mind that Dragon's Dogma 2 is extremely reactive and physics-driven. You can goad your foes towards buildings or cliff faces, climb on top of those, and then jump closer to the boss encounter's weakspot to immediately start slashing away. This will nullify the climbing stamina cost, and allow you to escape if push comes to shove.

Secondly, almost every Vocation has some ability to reduce the dangers of climbing monsters in Dragon's Dogma 2. In the case of the Fighter, for example, which is about as vanilla as vanilla gets at a glance, you can launch your more agile Pawns onto the bosses. The Fighter can also hide behind their powerful shield to minimize fall damage, which is extremely useful if you do end up getting shaken off while high up.

So, really, it's a matter of being fast, decisive, and - most importantly - inventive with the kit you have.

Oh, and one last piece of advice: after you fight a dragon or a drake, do a thorough check-up of your Pawns. You can thank us later.
