Now that we've established that Expeditions: Mudrunner is an extremely large game that'll easily keep you busy for dozens of hours on end, it's time to go over some of its core gameplay mechanics. Customization, for example, is one of the things you'll be doing over and over again, as you tweak and rebuild your trucks to adapt to an ever-growing list of insurmountable challenges. Look, you know that you basic Lada Niva lookalike simply won't cut it for climbing the face of a steep cliff. Why not turn it into something that could, though?
We're being cheeky, of course, but only slightly. Expeditions: Mudrunner emphasizes its vehicles' variability and flexibility with every turn of the wheel. From retrofitting a custom external roll cage onto your truck to replacing its drivetrain with that of a literal rock climber, the choices are yours. Money, of course, is a concern, and some car parts are locked behind particular missions and achievements. Learn all you need to know about these tidbits in the next couple of sections!

How to Customize Vehicles in Expeditions: Mudrunner
The good news is that you will have ready access to a huge roster of customization options from the get-go in Expeditions: Mudrunner. All you need to do is access your Garage (before jumping into an Expedition mission, mind), and see where you're at on that front. This will give you a solid overview of all the vehicles in your garage and allow you to tweak each and every one of them to your heart's content.
Something we'd like to point out here, though, is that you can buy multiple versions of the same truck, which is extremely useful if you intend to set up a niche vehicle purpose-built for a specific kind of terrain. Mud tires, for example, are excellent for mud, sand, and other such terrain, but won't be useful across the board. You may wish to build a custom mudrunning scout for mud-heavy situations, then, and you can keep it around in case push comes to shove.
How many vehicles are there in Expeditions?
On launch day, Expeditions: Mudrunner has a very focused and streamlined selection of trucks to choose from and unlock. There are three major categories of trucks as it currently stands:
- Scout vehicles
- Heavy vehicles
- Off-Road vehicles
A grand total of 19 vehicles is available, each with its own unique parts and goodies to tweak and customize. Sadly, only one heavy truck is currently present, though the good news is that you won't be using it all too often to begin with.
This makes sense if you consider that there literally are no proper roads and infrastructure in Expeditions, which is a big departure from Snowrunner and Mudrunner. All you need are lighter, customizable, and powerful off-roaders that'll get you through the thick of it, so there wasn't any need for genuine road vehicles in this game.
Does Expeditions: Mudrunner have more customization options than the older Mudrunner games?
Sadly, customization has taken a bit of a backseat in Expeditions. While actually usable kit is more granular and useful than ever before, there aren't many stickers and color schemes for you to unlock. We'd like to see more development in the pure customization side of things in the future, and the loss of bobbleheads and other such goodies is strange as well. If you don't mind losing out in the area of pure customization, though, you won't find a problem with this change in focus.
