Excited about a new dinosaur game, but need to know the Second Extinction system requirements to make sure your PC isn't too prehistoric to do it justice? Then you've come to the right place!

As is plainly obvious to everyone who cares, there are not enough dinosaur-themed games on the market, and Second Extinction dinosaurs are unlikely to fix that. What they will do, however, is to provide a relentless threat for Systemic Reactions' next major game release.

Now, we'll be the first to admit that, while surprisingly few video games deal with dinosaurs, fewer still manage to pull them off right. We'll forgive Second Extinction this sin, however, simply because it features monstrous mutant dinosaurs, rather than the actual animals we all know and love. These vicious monsters look every bit as creepy as they should, and will provide an incredible change of pace compared to the developer's previous title, Generation Zero. Don't get us wrong, we like Gen 0! It's just that Second Extinction feels like a way, way more dynamic gameplay experience.

If you're unfamiliar with the title, we suggest you scroll on ahead and get cozy! We're about to teach you everything important about Second Extinction and its specific brand of dinosaurs right here and now!

Second Extinction System Requirements

Before we move on to why you should be as excited about the community-driven dinosaur-focused FPS as we are, let's check out what sort of rig the game needs. Will it run on Pentium 3? If not, why not??? We joke, of course, and we do hope you won't need to reach for our low-end PC optimization guide to play Second Extinction. Thing is, GTX 1070 is recommended, at least during its Early Access phase.

Minimum System Requirements

  • CPU: Intel Core i5-3570 / AMD Ryzen 3 1300X
  • GPU: Nvidia GTX 780 / AMD R9 280 - 3 GB VRAM minimum
  • RAM: 12 GB
  • Storage: 30 GB of available space
  • Windows 10 x64

Recommended System Requirements

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-4770 / AMD Ryzen 5 1600X
  • GPU: Nvidia GTX 1070 / AMD Vega 56 - 8 GB VRAM recommended
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • Storage: 50 GB of available space
  • Windows 10 x64

Pretty significant, as we suggested above. With requirements such as these, we're either looking at a significantly complex open-world sandbox, or at an unoptimized mess. This being primarily an Early Access release, it honestly could go either way, but our experience with Systemic Reactions has been very good in this regard.

What is Second Extinction?

Described as a big map shooter, this game is kind of a strange experience for us to define. While there's no playable version of the game just yet - more on that later - developers have explained that we're basically looking at a very free-form, objective-driven first-person shooter. There's going to be one substantially large map for players to travel across, and it's going to be separated into specific regions. Each of these regions will have a unique threat level of its own, and depending on whether it's players or the dinosaurs that are winning, this will dynamically shift.

And yes - there will be a community progression feature added on top of that! "Our mantra is that players win battles, communities win wars," said the devs. "[regional threat level] can be
lowered if enough of our players are successful in their missions and activities. But the dinosaurs aren’t resting either, and they’ll focus their efforts where you aren’t."

We'll get weekly threat assessment updates and the community will have to deal with easier or more difficult encounters, depending on how things go globally. We're talking serious consequences, too! "Let the threat level get out of control and you can expect an especially tough Emergence Event to be waiting for you."

It's basically a more grounded Serious Sam type of thing, with permanent progression features and community interaction. We enjoy this premise a lot! From what we've seen so far, execution shouldn't be a problem either.

Second Extinction PC Release Date

The official PC release date for Second Extinction is October 13, and it's going to be priced at $24,99. This means we're getting heaps of updates and fresh content later on! However, if you're more interested in what you can play with day-one, here's a handy content list:

  • several accessible map regions
  • 4 playable characters
  • 10 weapons (with 5 upgrade tiers each)
  • 6 mission types
  • several unique side-quests

"But" - you might be asking - "what about the Second Extinction dinosaurs?" Oh, they're coming alright. In fact, we've even dedicated a whole section to the ones we've seen so far. Check it!

What Second Extinction Dinosaurs are there?

Alright, so far, Systemic Reaction has officially showcased only four dinosaurs that are coming in Second Extinction. We know for a fact, however, that there's going to be a lot more than that. We'll explain later on. For the time being, enjoy the beasties we know about!

Second Extinction Raptor

second-extinction-raptor1

Modeled after Jurassic Park's very own Utahraptor animal, this game's raptors are even more vicious than the ones that inspired them. Developers have suggested that these are no ordinary, natural mutations we're seeing in Second Extinction. And, yes, it is plainly obvious that something had gone horrifically wrong for such hyper-aggressive animals to suddenly appear on Earth. We don't know what the lore will entail, but we do know that these monsters' origins will be at the center of it.

While the game's Raptors will make the brunt of enemy forces we will fight against, their versatility is unquestionable. Find some other velociraptor mutations below!

 Second Extinction Electric Raptor

A further specialization of the Raptor phenotype, this creature is even faster and creepier than its progenitor. Far as we can tell, Electric Raptors might behave as anti-stealth units, seeking out players from far ahead, owing to their hyper-evolved sensory organs. Naturally, they also pack a significant crowd-control punch. They can, after all, straight-up tase you if you get too close.

Second Extinction Acid Raptor

Does damage-over-time sound like an annoying thing to be dealing with? Enter the Acid Raptor phenotype! Designed as ranged harasser units, they will dish out long-lasting health damage if they're not quickly dealt with. What gameplay we've seen so far suggests that they will behave as support for the more "conventional" enemies. What better way to soften up a hard target than with precise bursts of acid spit, right?

Second Extinction T-Rex

second-extinction-t-rex1

You didn't think Systemic Reactions would make a dinosaur game without a mutated T-Rex, did you know? Strong, vicious, and with a significant health-pool, this porcupine-rex will behave much like the Tank from Left 4 Dead. Since we know for a fact there will be defense objectives strewn around the game world, we fully expect this particular T-Rex to act as the raptors' siege-breaker. Did we mention how friggin' big this thing is, by the way? It's big.

That can't be all, right?

Not even by a long-shot. We've got a few gameplay videos featured below, and you'll probably notice that there's way more variety present in enemy composition than just raptors and an odd disruptor Rex here and there. We've seen tiny scout dinosaurs, for example, that will make long travel routes more interesting than we might wish for. Then there are the digger-looking monsters, which may or may not be another Raptor phenotype.

Devs have also mentioned herbivore dinosaurs several times now, and there's bound to be more coming with updates as we go along. With all of that in mind, variety shouldn't be a problem in the long run.

Second Extinction Characters, Weapons, Gadgets

second-extinction-dinosaurs3

While Second Extinction characters aren't nearly as interesting as its dinosaurs, they definitely cover a wide variety of playable niches. There's been four presented so far, though there's going to be more playable characters released later on.

Not only will these characters have access to 10 unique (full upgradable) firearms, ranging from bullpup carbines all the way to anti-materiel rifles, but each also comes with a unique set of abilities to use in combat. These include (but aren't limited to) field repair drones, rapid evasive dashes, stealth fields, and heaps more! Each character has a specific role to play, so we'll need to weigh our options for every given encounter and mission. Definitely makes for an interesting gameplay setup, and we're keen on trying it out for ourselves!

Gameplay & Trailers: Why Second Extinction Dinosaurs are badass

This is all great on paper, of course, but what about the gameplay? Thankfully, devs have released heaps and heaps of showcases so far, and the game is nothing if not well-represented in media at this point. If you're intrigued by the prospect of shooting Second Extinction dinosaurs and working on community goals, be sure to watch the trailers below!
