If you've been keeping track of Capcom's upcoming Resident Evil Village flagship, then you know that all the Resident Evil Village enemies we've seen so far are not what you'd expect out of the franchise.

Granted, we've had mutated frogs, sharks, and all sorts of purpose-designed killer insects. With Resident Evil Village, though, Resident Evil is digging deep into decades of gothic horror lore. To that end, we seemingly won't be dealing with science-fictional monstrosities anymore. Indeed, instead of zombie like creatures, we're to expect werewolves, vampires, and other similarly endemic terrors to the quaint Eastern European locale that the game is set in.

Fun stuff, right? Good luck Ethan Winters!

Resident Evil Village is set and primed to hit the stores tomorrow, on May 7th. This means that we're extremely excited to actually start playing it, and we'd like to share that excitement with you, too! For one, you may want to check out our top list of all the major RE games on PC.

Of course, you can also grab the pre-order right now via 2Game. Alternatively, we may have something special coming up tomorrow. If you're looking for a way to get Resident Evil Village without spending a dime... do check in every so often.

What's The Big Deal With Resident Evil Village Enemies?

The simple truth is that, while zombie like creatures themselves may have been emblematic of the Resi franchise since forever, they were never really the main threat. Even in the first game in the series, we got treated to some really ridiculous encounters. From actual mutated sharks to RE2's Mr. X, Capcom has never really been shy about introducing all sorts of out-there developments to their bestiary.

This is a good thing, of course. We're sure that the franchise would've gotten stale had it never evolved past its basic Romero-inspired premise. Now, with Resident Evil 4 being a clear inspiration for Resident Evil Village, it's plainly obvious that Capcom's taking big cues from the game's old progenitor.

In Resident Evil Village, not only are you / Ethan Winters stuck in a suspiciously grimy Eastern European village that's way past its prime, but you're also duking it out with enemies that seem supernatural at first. We're talking about the obvious inclusion of vampires and werewolves ready and raring to attack Ethan.

To be sure - the choices absolutely fit with the game's premise. What may confuse some, however, is that Resident Evil has always been a decidedly science-fiction franchise. By dialing down its 'biological horror' schtick, it may seem like Resident Evil Village leans more heavily towards the supernatural.

Resident Evil Village Enemies Explained

Again, something similar happened with RE4's Ganados and their religious zealotry. It really was a thing to behold, but in the end, it was obvious that the whole shindig is just another instance of parasitic infection and excessive DNA mutation.

There's not a doubt in our proverbial mind that something similar will happen with Resident Evil Village, too. After all, how hard could it possibly be for an Umbrella virus to create lycans and vampiric creatures over something more generic? Of course, we don't actually know anything about potential narrative reveals in Village. Not yet, at least. Early reviews suggest that we're in for a familiar ride, at least in that regard.

While we sadly don't yet have access to a full list of enemies in Resident Evil Village, we do have a solid idea of the variety we're to expect. According to CNet's review of the game, there are four major sections, with a specific Lord... well, lording over them. Each Lord features their own set of terrifying enemies for us to take down, which basically ensures a huge amount of diversity in learning enemy weaknesses and in how encounters will play out.

Eurogamer's preview of enemies and enemy encounters, for example, got us a glimpse of what we're to expect. Lycans seem to be a major consideration in at least one big section of Village, and they're even a baseline enemy from what we could tell. Unlike the zombies of yesteryear, however, they're fast, vicious, and almost ridiculously agile. Worst of all - much like wolves - they attack in packs.

Sword-wielding and/or flying Thralls will also be a big consideration. In moment-to-moment gameplay, they behave more closely to classic zombies we know and love. They're sneaky, though, and get a few upgrades as the game proceeds.

Boss Encounters in Resident Evil Village

If we know little about the regular enemies in Resident Evil Village, we know even less about its bosses. Aside from the obvious pending fight with Lady Dimitrescu, the previews have suggested that we'd meet (and kill) a further four Lords or bosses throughout the game's 10-12 hour main campaign. We've got good reason to suspect that we'll duke it out with a number of other major figures, too, which may serve as mini-boss encounters along the way. Lady Dimitrescu's "Daughters", for example. In true vampire folklore fashion, Lady Dimitrescu's relationship with these three sisters has been compared to Count Dracula and his three ‘brides'.

The four Lords are as follows:

If you've been keeping track of things, you'll notice that these coincide with the four different noble Houses that players will need to contend with as they travel to deal with the Big Bad of the game, Mother Miranda. There's a clear neo-pagan influence surrounding the design of Mother Miranda and her cronies. Our guess would be that she's somehow controlling the local variety of BOW mutations present in Village, but we'll need to wait and see how the game plays out as far as the puppet master, crow-like, "presence worshipped" Mother Miranda is concerned.

Overall, everything leads us to suspect that variety in regular enemy encounters and bosses will be significant. While previous Resident Evil games have had the baseline enemies present throughout the game from beginning to end, we may see a different approach this time. We suspect that we'll need to deal with entirely different rosters from one House to the other. If the notion of the game being open-world is true, then we may be able to choose the order in which Houses are dealt with.

Having four disparate enemy rosters that fill relevant niches in encounters makes perfect sense then, doesn't it?

Wrap-Up

Did you know that the earliest Resident Evil Village reviews are already coming in? That's right, some people have already been reunited with Ethan Winters and played through the game! According to what we've seen so far, we're looking at a stellar release through and through. Most reviewers seem to agree that this may well be the best Resident Evil game we've had yet, even. That's hardly an everyday development, we'd say.

"Village doesn't pull any punches when it comes to horror," said Ben Reeves of Game Informer. "A consistent rollout of new weapons and tools makes it hard to walk away from these terrors." He scored the game with a phenomenal 9.3/10.

Eurogamer and PC Gamer had similarly glowing reviews for Resident Evil Village. However, we'll have a comprehensive overview of scores ready for your consideration tomorrow. What you need to know right now, though, is that it's 100% a quality product. Whether it makes its way to the very top of our best-of RE list, though - we'll need to wait and see!

We've got a very exciting weekend ahead, that's for sure. Stock up on energy drinks and grab RE: Village at a discount while you can - right here at 2Game! Hell, you can even do so using your crypto.
