Risk of Rain 2: Formula Puzzle was the official introduction to the game's all-new Artifact feature! The process of unlocking these unique match modifiers is rather involved, though, and even if you discovered the new interactive objects, you probably didn't know what to do with them. That's what this Risk of Rain 2 Artifact Code overview aims to help with!

Below, we'll show you how to unlock each new ROR2 Artifact, with Artifact code descriptions and all. The so-called submit formula process is more straightforward than it might seem initially, and we'll teach you how to get the most out of it. At the moment of writing, there are exactly 16 Artifacts in the game, and you'll find tips on unlocking all of them below. They are fully up-to-date with the last big content update the game received!

The Basics of Artifact Unlocking

Unlike virtually every other unlockable in Risk of Rain 2, Artifacts aren't locked behind simple challenges. Whereas Alternative Skills for Characters and Item Challenges are something you can work on almost passively, this won't fly with Artifact unlocking.

If you're lucky, and if you've spent any substantial amount of time playing Risk of Rain 2 after its Artifact Update, you've probably come across weird stone slabs with code on them. These will be your bread and butter during the Artifact unlocking stage. Whenever you find one, you should grab a screenshot of the featured Artifact code just to be safe! We do have a list of codes prepared below, but if you're the solo unlocker type, feel free to hunt for the codes yourself! There's one for each of the game's levels, so it may take a while.

After finding your first Code Slab, the first order of business will be to get to the legendary returning stage from the first game: Sky Meadow. This level is set up so as to appear 5th in line, so don't worry too much about randomness in this case. Now, the level itself is perfectly normal: it's what's beneath the main playing area that we're interested in. Drop below the lowest platform and keep an eye out for a lone floating island hovering about. It's hard to miss, but you may have to reposition yourself a few times to get to it.

It's on this island that you'll find the Compound Generator, and finally get to unlocking your first Artifact.

What is the Risk of Rain 2 Submit Formula process?

risk of rain 2 artifact patterns

Now that you know where the Compound Generator is, you'll need to start inputting those Artifact patterns we spoke about earlier. This is the Risk of Rain 2 submit formula process! After you know a certain Artifact pattern, you go on ahead to the Compound Generator, set up its holo-displays so that they correspond to your code, and bam: off to Bulwark's Ambry we go. We're getting a bit ahead of ourselves here, though.

To unlock an Artifact, it's not enough to just submit your Artifact code and be done with it. Instead, after you input the correct pattern, you'll interact with the laptop in front of the code assembly. This will, in turn, open a unique portal to another new level: Bulwark's Ambry. If you were waiting for the part where things get interesting, this is it!

This all-new Hidden Realm features an involved boss fight.

How to beat Artifact Reliquary?

As you may expect, the only way to get the Artifact you chose to go after, is to beat the boss encounter. Instead of simply gunning down the massive Artifact Reliquary, be prepared for a more mechanically challenging activity. Firstly, you'll have to run around the level and collect glowing Artifact Keys. Once you have an Artifact Key, get as close to the Reliquary as you can, and interact with it. This will slowly siphon the boss's health away. Naturally, enemies will be hounding you along the way, and note that dying while holding an Artifact Key means you need to repeat the process all over again. It takes 4 total interactions to beat the Reliquary, and when you do, you will have unlocked an Artifact!

NOTE: The laptop interface is the "bottom" of each formula/code/pattern. Something to keep in mind if orientation is bugging you.

Now that we've explained the mechanics of it, let us show you the actual Artifact Patterns.

Full list of Risk of Rain 2 Artifact Patterns

Can you spot the Titanic Plains code on the screenshot above? It's got a cheeky hiding spot, we'll tell you that! The process of getting Artifact code instances is as involved as you want it to be. If you'd like to go after them on your own, it's a fun side activity. If you'd like to cut out the hassle, however, that's precisely where we come in. Just below, we'll give you the locations and the codes for each of the game's 16 base Artifacts. Naturally, we'll also tell you what each of them does: for good measure.

Distant Roost Artifact Pattern: Artifact of Kin

Artifact of Kin can be a massive boon, but also a massive pain in the hiney. When enabled, it will make it so that there's only one single Monster type on each level. Far as we can tell, this is randomized: you might get weaksauce Lesser Wisps, but you also might get god-awful Imps! Sure makes for a cheeky change of pace.

  • Artifact of Kin Pattern:
    • CIRCLE - TRIANGLE - TRIANGLE
    • DIAMOND - CIRCLE - TRIANGLE
    • DIAMOND - DIAMOND - CIRCLE

Abandoned Aqueduct Artifact Pattern: Artifact of Chaos

Most Artifacts are just wacky modifiers: not necessarily something that's going to ruin your runs left and right. The Artifact of Chaos is hard-mode, though. Using this thingie will enable friendly fire for both you and the monsters, but since player characters tend to ramp up far faster than monsters do, it will make for a tough time.

  • Artifact of Chaos Pattern:
    • CIRCLE - TRIANGLE - CIRCLE
    • CIRCLE - TRIANGLE - CIRCLE
    • CIRCLE - TRIANGLE - CIRCLE

Rallypoint Delta Artifact Pattern: Artifact of Swarms

This is one of our favorite modifiers: Artifact of Swarms doubles the monster spawns and halves the monsters' health. If you're in for a power trip, this is the Artifact you should be going after. Note, however, that boss spawns may double too, but what would Risk of Rain 2 be without half-a-dozen boss monsters chasing after you, right?

  • Artifact of Swarms Pattern:
    • CIRCLE - CIRCLE - TRIANGLE
    • TRIANGLE - DIAMOND - TRIANGLE
    • TRIANGLE - CIRCLE - CIRCLE

Abyssal Depths Artifact Pattern: Artifact of Dissonance

Similar to Artifact of Kin, Artifact of Dissonance revamps monster spawns in a pretty major way: monster types will appear outside of their native biomes. If you really hate the idea of knowing what to expect out of each level, Dissonance is the Artifact for you.

  • Artifact of Dissonance
    • CIRCLE - SQUARE - SQUARE
    • SQUARE - SQUARE - SQUARE
    • SQUARE - SQUARE - CIRCLE

Titanic Plains Artifact Pattern: Artifact of Metamorphosis

If you're indifferent towards Survivors and don't mind playing with whichever, the Artifact of Metamorphosis will be your pal. Using this randomizes which character you play as, simple as that.

  • Artifact of Metamorphosis
    • DIAMOND - SQUARE - CIRCLE
    • DIAMOND - SQUARE - CIRCLE
    • DIAMOND - SQUARE - CIRCLE

Wetlands Aspect Artifact Pattern: Artifact of Death

No beating around the bush with this one! The Artifact of Death really ramps things up if you're playing multiplayer: whenever one player dies, everyone dies. This one should be near the bottom of your Artifact list if you don't want to make things even more difficult for yourself. If you're playing solo, though, it's hardly a difference.

  • Artifact of Death
    • CIRCLE - CIRCLE - CIRCLE
    • SQUARE - TRIANGLE - SQUARE
    • CIRCLE - TRIANGLE - CIRCLE

Scorched Acres Artifact Pattern: Artifact of Soul

Another cheeky Artifact! The Artifact of Soul makes it so that Wisps emerge from defeated monsters, so double the trouble. It's fun if you're going for a high-roller run, if nothing else. You are getting double the money from each monster spawn, after all. Not too difficult to deal with at first, but things can get nasty at high difficulty levels.

  • Artifact of Soul
    • CIRCLE - SQUARE - CIRCLE
    • CIRCLE - DIAMOND - CIRCLE
    • SQUARE - DIAMOND - SQUARE

Siren's Call / Void Fields Artifact Pattern: Artifact of Frailty

Enjoying Risk of Rain 2's movement mechanics? Not with the Artifact of Frailty you aren't! This dastardly thing doubles fall damage and makes it lethal, if push comes to shove. Literally: don't let monsters push you off ledges!

  • Artifact of Frailty
    • CIRCLE - CIRCLE - CIRCLE
    • TRIANGLE - CIRCLE - TRIANGLE
    • TRIANGLE - TRIANGLE - TRIANGLE

Sky Meadow Artifact Pattern: Artifact of Honor

If we're talking strictly about Artifacts that make your life harder, the Artifact or Honor is no slouch. Namely, this bad boy makes it so that enemies can only spawn as Elites. Yeah, no, you read that right: all enemies are Elites with the Honor Artifact on. We'll side-step this one, we think, but if you hate yourself, be our guest!

  • Artifact of Honor
    • SQUARE - SQUARE - SQUARE
    • SQUARE - TRIANGLE - SQUARE
    • SQUARE - SQUARE - SQUARE

A Moment, Fractured Artifact Pattern: Artifact of Glass

Ever heard of glass cannons? That's precisely what the Artifact of Glass turns you into. This thingamajig lets you deal 500% damage, but reduces your health to 10% of your base stats. Hardly a novelty, but something to spice a playthrough or two, for sure. If nothing else, it's definitely going to make things way more interesting when the going gets tough. With this little health, you'll be one-shot by just about anything!

  • Artifact of Glass
    • DIAMOND - DIAMOND - DIAMOND
    • DIAMOND - DIAMOND - DIAMOND
    • DIAMOND - DIAMOND - DIAMOND

A Moment, Whole Artifact Pattern: Artifact of Evolution

Artifact of Evolution is an interesting example, because it easily changes how the entire game works! If you enable this Artifact code, monsters will randomly receive item upgrades between stages. It's completely random which items they get, of course, but they will be way more powerful by the 4th of 5th stage already. Great for experimentation!

  • Artifact of Evolution
    • DIAMOND - DIAMOND - DIAMOND
    • SQUARE - SQUARE - SQUARE
    • CIRCLE - CIRCLE - CIRCLE

Bazaar Between Time Artifact Pattern: Artifact of Command

The Artifact of Command is of great use for those who are looking to test their experimental builds. Simply enough, this modifier lets you choose your Items, so that you know which ones to go after in non-Artifact runs. An ease-of-use alteration to your playthrough, but with how difficult some other Artifacts make things, we think a few nice ones are needed as well!

  • Artifact of Evolution
    • SQUARE - SQUARE - SQUARE
    • SQUARE - SQUARE - SQUARE
    • TRIANGLE - TRIANGLE - TRIANGLE

Bulwark's Ambry Artifact Pattern: Artifact of Enigma

That's right! Even the secret Artifact unlocking stage has an Artifact Pattern all of its own. A tricky modifier, too, because the Enigma Artifact spawns you with a random Equipment Item that changes on each activation. Huh, talk about complications! Sure, you might luck out every once in a while, but Enigma dictates that each activation gives you random Equipment, so you'll have to know what each item does, and when to use it.

  • Artifact of Enigma
    • DIAMOND - SQUARE - SQUARE
    • TRIANGLE - SQUARE - TRIANGLE
    • CIRCLE - DIAMOND - DIAMOND

Gilded Coast Artifact Pattern: Artifact of Sacrifice

The neatly-named Artifact of Sacrifice isn't what you might expect it to be. Firstly, item chests no longer spawn at all, but enemies might drop items instead! This means that the Artifact of Sacrifice lets you almost entirely ignore the game's economy feature, and focus on mass slaughter instead! Interesting...

  • Artifact of Sacrifice
    • TRIANGLE - TRIANGLE - TRIANGLE
    • TRIANGLE - TRIANGLE - TRIANGLE
    • TRIANGLE - DIAMOND - TRIANGLE

Environment Log Artifact Pattern: Artifact of Vengeance

This is where things get a bit weird: some of the game's Artifacts appear completely out of context! For example, the Artifact of Vengeance, which makes it so that you're invaded by your own doppelganger every 10 minutes, can be found in the game's Environment Log menu! If you don't feel like scrounging for it, though, fret not.

  • Artifact of Vengeance
    • DIAMOND - SQUARE - SQUARE
    • DIAMOND - CIRCLE - SQUARE
    • DIAMOND - SQUARE - SQUARE

Settings Screen Artifact Pattern: Artifact of Spite

Another oddity is the Artifact of Spite, which can partially be seen in the game's Settings Screen. Finding its full sequence took a bit of work, but we got it done eventually! The Artifact of Spite is a fun one, for sure: enemies drop multiple exploding shards on death. You're going to want to keep some distance between you and your targets with this modifier.

  • Artifact of Spite
    • TRIANGLE - CIRCLE - TRIANGLE
    • CIRCLE - CIRCLE - CIRCLE
    • TRIANGLE - CIRCLE - TRIANGLE
