Did you get that? There's a lot! 10 mins worth, to be exact. But if you want to reach the top ranks, you had better pay attention! Don't worry, that's where we come in, to summarize the main points. We've got you covered!

Why you need to get online

Being the best means not only being able to beat most characters, but also beating most players. And that involves getting online. Online is where you compete for ranked points. It's where you get to show the world what you're worth. It's also the best place to pick up pointers about how to play as and against different characters, which will then help you take on these opponents in other modes.

I mean, that's the beauty of a global community right? The fact that we all go about playing characters in our own way, and that we can learn from one another about the sequences that work, and don't work so well.

The Replay Feature

Man, I wish one of these features existed in real life. The chance to re-do something that didn't quite go to plan. It's very useful in TEKKEN 8, I can tell you! The perfect way to help to learn from your defeats, which again is something we could all do with in life when we make a mistake!

A top tip from TheMainManSWE, is to re-assume control of your character for the allocated 10 seconds during a replay. This way you can use your newly acquired information immediately to see what you could have done differently.

Know your opponent

To be the best you have to know how to get the most out of your chosen character. But that's not enough. You also need to understand the strengths and weaknesses of all other 31 opponents. As we've already mentioned, online battles are useful here. However, if you've got a particular nemesis you just can't get the better of, you may need to take a more strategic approach.

TheMainManSWE's advice? Play as that character in practice mode. Check out their Moves List and open the Main Techniques section to familiarize yourself with their most important moves, as well as their utility. And remember, your moves will work differently against big or small opponents. Again, do your research!

Patient Play

Remember, good things come to those who wait. Big attacks leave you vulnerable to counter attacks. Instead of going in full throttle, sometimes it's better to bide your time. To actually spend more time in defense mode, guarding against attacks, drawing your opponent out.

Frustrate your opponent. Let them show their hand. Goad them into over-extending and taking risks. Then, just as their guard is down, pounce. Seize the moment, and strike with your most devastating combo. K.O.!

Fighting Fundamentals

The most comprehensive of the sections, TheMainManSWE outlines the fighting fundamentals you will need to become the best.

Movement

The first mechanic to master is movement. The fluid and dynamic movement of the game allows you to move fast. Very fast. And you will want to be comfortable with the various possible moves available to you. This includes the more complicated maneuvers like the backdash and even the backdash cancel, which, although not essential, is a nice string to add to the bow of the more advanced players.

Then we come back to application, and knowing your opponent. For example, if you're fighting Paul, you'll want to backdash to avoid his most threatening throws, as well as his Demolition Man. Against Kazuay on the other hand, you'll want to side walk towards your left side to beat his most powerful attacks.

Counter hit timing

As mentioned earlier, counter attacks are the safest way to finish off an opponent. Again this involves patience and learning your opponent's game. Basically, counter hit timing involves figuring out the pattern of your opponent's attacks, and timing your attack accordingly. Get this right, and the damage you will inflict is unreal.

Breaking guard

Another mechanic to get under your belt is the ability to break an opponents guard with mid-low mix ups. Here it's important to change things up to keep your opponent on their toes.

Throws

Throws are also good for applying stress on your opponent's guard, especially if that's a specialty of your character. Again, if you know your opponent's weaknesses, you can challenge their defenses by attacks that have advantage even when guarded against, using moves that break guards if you have that ability in your locker.

Mix it up

Overall, the key take away is to be unpredictable. Both offensively and defensively. For example, mix up your moves, and when knocked down, try to vary the ways in which you get back up. The secret to success is to keep your opponent guessing. It's that element of surprise and unpredictability that will get you to the top.

And that's a wrap!

I think all that's left to say is a huge thank you to TheMainManSWE for such an insightful tutorial. We hope you found it useful, we certainly did!

Good luck, and enjoy putting all this into practice!
