As many of you surely know, the Warhammer franchise has been around for a good long while now. Courtesy of Games Workshop, the original fantasy Warhammer setting came about almost 40 years ago, back in 1983. That's a hell of a long time for a franchise to persevere through! However, it's not just that Warhammer has managed to survive, but the franchise has straight-up proliferated over the long years since. Its grimdark sci-fi offshoot, Warhammer 40K, for example, ended up being even more successful in the long run. Our Skulls for the Skull Throne Sale aims to celebrate all of that.

The annual Warhammer event hosted by Games Workshop themselves - Skulls for the Skull Throne - has now moved on over to the digital era in full. As COVID restrictions still linger, the event has been reorganized as 'Warhammer Skulls', and is now a purely digital predicament. GW announced a huge number of exciting new items. Some of them content updates for existing titles, some of them development updates for upcoming titles, and finally, some of them all-new reveals for new games, like the Chaos Gate sequel.

That's all well and good, of course, but we'll get to those announcements in due time. Right now, we'd like to present you with a cross-section of some of the best video games Warhammer has got to offer. All of them - at a discount!

Skulls for the Skull Throne Sale

While many gaming franchises have tried to achieve the sheer width and breadth of genre coverage that Warhammer has, we're reasonably sure none of them have come even remotely close. The reason for that is simple: Warhammer is specifically designed to cater to anything and everything. It's a perfect setting for virtually every game we could possibly imagine, and it can host just about every gaming niche under the sun.

Strategy games? Easy! Shooters of any make and model? No problem! Roguelites? Yes-sir! In fact, it was just over a week ago that Necromunda: Hired Gun hit the ground running, and boy is that thing a hoot. It's basically a Doom game set in the grimiest parts of the human empire, so you know it's a trip all of its own.

As we said, though, our Skull Throne Sale is here to get us back to basics. Here's what we think you really need to add to your game library sooner, rather than later. We intend to do that with discounts up to 75% off!

Dawn of War Series - The Ultimate Sci-Fi RTS

Many of us had grown up playing one Dawn of War game or the other. A masterclass in real-time strategy design, the original Dawn of War offers virtually everything you could ask for in a genre offering. A huge, sprawling campaign with stories for each of the playable races, a comprehensive Skirmish mode for sandbox thingamajigs, and a wealth of Multiplayer options for those times when you just want to destroy your friends and family in open warfare. It happens to the best of us! Dawn of War II, on the other hand, focuses more closely on squad-level combat. Add some RPG progression systems to the mix, and you've got a hybrid title that's got absolutely no competition, even today! Yours truly's favorite RTS, no joke.

Total War: Warhammer Series - The Pinnacle of Total War

What could we possibly say about Total War: Warhammer that hasn't already been said? Look, we're big fans of virtually everything that SEGA and Creative Assembly put out, but few things can parry the sheer scale and grandeur of a grand Warhammer strategy title. What really gets us about TW: W games, though, is the incredible integration between titles that is bound to include TW: Warhammer III once it's out, too. Namely, the campaigns all combine into one immense super-campaign that includes all the content all TW: W games have got to offer. That's pretty much what IOI did with their latest Hitman trilogy, but at an even bigger scale! Impressive, right? Also means that previous TW: W games remain relevant a hell of a lot longer.

Space Marine - An Ultramarine's Dream Come True

skull-throne-sale-banner3

Space Marine is far from the grandiose offerings that are Dawn of War and Total War: Warhammer, but this is by design. Whereas the games featured above are a megalomaniac's wet dream, Space Marine is the story of a single Ultramarine that needs to make things right. For the Emperor, of course. It's still a remarkably impressive game, too. Not only does Space Marine hit the general WH40K notes perfectly, but it's also very much in the spirit of, say, Dawn of War II. The game is great in its own right, and if you need a cool new shooter to play through, why not make it be this one? Orcs and Chaos await, after all!

Skull Throne Sale: Don't forget to check out what else is in store!

Finally, if you're looking for an excuse to stock up on all the Warhammer DLC you could possibly wish for, now may be the time to splurge. With a wide-sweeping discount in place on virtually everything we've got, there's no reason why you couldn't find an upgrade or two for your favorite Warhammer game, we reckon. Have fun!

What's Next for the Skull Throne?

Games Workshop and the Warhammer franchise at large are showing absolutely no signs of stopping anytime soon. With games such as Darktide and the incredibly exciting Total War: Warhammer III on the way, who in their right mind would want them to? If anything, we fully expect WH and WH40K to become even more ubiquitous in the future.

And - yes - it's a given that some arguably bad games will come out, too. If Games Workshop and their contracted developers and publishers can keep it up, we do not mind. SEGA, for one, has been on a roll as of late. We can't wait to see what else they've got cooking.

We'll be on top of major Warhammer-related announcements as we go along. If you're intrigued, be sure to check in with our Community Hub every so often!

Wrap-Up!

Now that you, too, are fully equipped with some of the best PC games Warhammer has got to offer, it's time to kick back and enjoy the weekend.

If you're in the mood for some light reading, though, we've got you covered! Just yesterday, for example, we showcased the awesome new Sims 4 DLC alongside a top-list of our favorite DLCs for the game at large. We also couldn't help but join the hype train for Elder Scrolls Online's latest and greatest expansion pack. Oblivion Gates hit Tamriel again, how could we possibly stay calm about that, of all things?

Finally, if you'd like to get some more weekend game recommendations, our list from last week over still stands. Yours truly has been enjoying Project Cars 3, for example. It's a real hoot, and though it can't hold a candle to Forza Horizon 4's car collection and modding systems, the progression is awesome. Have a good one!
