While we certainly were a tad disappointed to hear that Resident Evil 4 on PC wasn't getting an official preloading window, there was never any doubt in our minds that Capcom had something special in tow for PC gamers. It's easy to see why, too: the studio's established RE engine is a phenomenally flexible piece of software. Not only does it work well on a huge variety of hardware, but it also looks great and affords PC gamers all the scalability they'd possibly need in practice.

And, true enough, we already knew that RE4R was gonna be good: reviewers got their hands on it last week, and settled on scores upwards of 8/10! But, professional gaming press is one thing. The general public is something else entirely.

To that end, now that we can all finally step into Leon's boots and gun down a Ganado or two, it's time to ask: what do the players actually think? If you've been waiting to see how the actual, regular gamers feel about Resident Evil 4 Remake, this is the place to be.

What Do The Players Think About Resident Evil 4 on PC?

Resident Evil 4 on PC: Featured Reviews

Let's provide some context to the image featured above - just to get a sense of how big of a win this really is for Capcom. Resident Evil 4 is currently sitting at an approval rating of almost 90% on day one of its release. Note, too, that these are only the PC reviews featured on Steam - we're not talking about the game's console performance at all.

Further, SteamDB clarifies that such a high approval rating has been calculated based on almost 2,000 disparate reviews! The vast majority of these are, obviously, highly positive. A testament to what the developers have achieved here, yes, but also a verification of what the reviewers have been saying all along: RE4R is awesome.

Now that we've firmly established just how good of a game this is, it's time to talk specifics: what makes Resident Evil 4 such a good horror game? For that, we'll need to go a tad deeper into the most popular sources of community data on the Internet!

What Are The People Saying About RE4R?

Context is king. If you're anything like us, then simply hearing that, yes, a game is good won't be enough for you. Now, obviously, if you've got a favorite game reviewer that you jive with on YouTube, that's going to be an excellent source of information about the game.

That being said... sometimes, it pays off to just put your ear on the floor and listen to what the community is saying. That's precisely what we've done here, assembling some of the most popular thoughts jotted down by gamers themselves!

According to Shadowcreeper15 on the official Resident Evil subreddit, they're "blown away with how great this remake is." Specifically, they said that "[Capcom has] improved everything. Things that were already great they made better. Things you didn't think you want you got. Couldn't be more happier and it's only getting better," they concluded.

Now, it's immediately worth pointing out that most people haven't had the chance to finish the game yet. It's simple physics of time and space, really: you can't shove 20 hours' worth of gameplay into less than 12 hours' worth of time spent! Still, the spirits are exceedingly high in the community.

"I really, really hope this level of care and detail extends to the castle and island," said forcena, looking back at the time they already spent playing RE4. "So far this game is a 10/10 for me."

And, to take a quick gander at some of the game's PC-specific features, it looks like everything's clear on that front, too. The game runs about as well as Resident Evil: Village does, with a few notable visual upgrades in key areas. There are, however, more graphical options to choose from, and there are already Nvidia DLSS upgrades available for those who'd like to tweak things around!

How About The User Reviews on Steam, Though?

To truly drive our point home, though, a single source wasn't enough. We needed to look past just one gaming community and take a gander at another: Steam! Many will be thrilled to hear that the general consensus is largely the same: Capcom has produced a phenomenal remake of a phenomenal game. What more could one wish for?

Naturally, it goes without saying that a large portion of any game's Steam reviews will be joke reviews and memes. We did come across a few notable highlights, however!

According to VIRAL, they had been waiting 18 years for a game to thrill them as much as RE4 did back in the day. "As it turns out," they said, "this whole time I've just been waiting for another Resident Evil 4."

An experienced review, Dfactor, seems to have gotten his hands on an early copy of the game, giving an in-depth insight into what makes it tick. "The combat is on par with the best action-oriented survival horror titles, the QTEs are eradicated, Ashley is better than ever, the presentation is more down to earth, tedious sections have been appropriately handled, all that while this being the longest RE Remake title by far," they said.

Almost everyone agrees, though: not only is this one of the best games of the year, but it's quite possibly also one of the best games Capcom's ever produced. When you think back to just how many blockbusters the company has had in the past years, that's tall praise indeed.

Yes - Capcom Is On A Roll

So, there you have it. Reviewers love the game! The community loves the game! Everyone seems to be a fan. Remaking one of the most beloved, most influential games of all time was never going to be an easy task, but Capcom's proven its worth once again. Just a few days back, we discussed the issue of remaking and remastering classic, influential video games for new audiences with new sensibilities. There, we concluded that there wasn't a way to truly replicate the success of the original.

Today, we need to extrapolate: there's not really a need to replicate anything. Clearly, the Resident Evil 4 Remake is more than good enough to stand on its own two feet. In fact, we're all but certain that it's going to make it onto our list of top 100 PC games for this year's update, and it may even make it into the top 10...

It's an exciting time to be a PC-gaming Resident Evil fan, is what we're getting at. Could it be that Code Veronica might be coming next? We won't knock on wood just yet, but you really never know, do you now?
