Overcooked Guide Rule Number 1: Divide and Conquer

If you take anything away from this Overcooked guide, let it be this – division of labour is the key to success. When the level starts your best bet is to decide who is going to do what. For example, have one player be in charge of chopping up vegetables while another one cooks meat. That way, you won't be getting in each other's way, and you'll significantly improve the cooking process. After all, Henry Ford didn't invent the moving assembly line for anything.

One other Overcooked tip I can give you is to be wary of dirty dishes when dividing the tasks. They tend to pile up while you're not looking and can seriously mess up your workflow. My advice is to wash the dishes in turns or whenever any of you have a spare moment. Either way, be mindful of those sneaky dirty dishes. They're the real villain of Overcooked, and clean dishes are, really, your saving grace.

And, much as it is in real-life, washing dishes may often turn out to be the most time-consuming task on the level. Neat!

Overcooked Guide Rule Number 2: Relax, Take It Easy

Overcooked beginner guide

This one might be a bit harder to accomplish, given the hectic nature of Overcooked. Regardless, it's still essential amongst Overcooked tips and tricks. It's pretty simple – relax.

The first time you enter a level you'll most likely be surprised by all the stuff happening. And that's how it's supposed to be, so don't give yourself a hard time. Most importantly, it will take you a minute to remember the positioning of each stove, food, cutting board, and everything else. If you relax and take it easy, you'll have a much better chance to get the hang of it, and you'll most likely earn yourself three stars by your second attempt without a hitch!

Keep an eye on the colored bar at the top of your player UI, but try not to mind it too much! You may discover that chilling out over the course of a few levels may help you get a better sense of what's key in Overcooked's gameplay loop, and once you've got that settled, you're golden.

Miscellaneous Overcooked Tips & Tricks

Overcooked beginner strategy

The above are the two most essential things in an Overcooked beginner's guide, and even just following the two of them will net you a three-star rating on most levels. However, I can share some smaller tips with you before this Overcooked guide is over.

First of all, remember those pesky dirty plates? As it turns out, you don't have to move them to the sink individually. Instead, let them pile up and then move them all together. And speaking of plates – if none are around, you can use hamburger buns, tortillas, and rolled pizza dough as a temporary replacement to put the other ingredients.

Furthermore, when getting food from the pot, do not pick up the pot and use it on the plate. Instead, take the plate and use it on the pot. That way, you have the order ready to carry and don't have to reset the pot back into position.

Now here is one very slippery Overcooked trick. When you're playing in the ice world, if you sprint on ice, you can jump across small gaps. This can allow you to reach other parts of the level you usually couldn't.

Finally, if you find your pot burning (and let's face it – we all do sometimes) and you don't have enough time to chop up the next ingredient and put it in, you can safely pick up the pot and put it next to the stove. That way, you save yourself a very nasty accident which, luckily, you don't have actually to smell.
