New Tales From The Borderlands: The Plot

New Tales From The Borderlands boasts a production team bursting with creative talent and experience. And it shows! With a brief to expand the Borderlands universe by delving deeper into the story-telling aspect of the game, the writers transport us back to the aftermath of an unceremonious explosion of a Frogurt store that took place in the besieged planet of Promethea, Meridian City, in Borderlands 3.

In the bloody mayhem of much of the Borderlands gameplay, such acts of destruction would have been considered of minor significance - collateral damage. Indeed, this particular explosion was only brought to our attention in Borderlands 3 as it was Rhys' favorite Frogurt store that was desolated.

However, In New Tales From The Borderlands, our focus shifts away from the grandiose looting and shooting missions of the Vault Hunters. Instead, we zoom in on the lives of ordinary civilians trying to get by in this violent corporatocracy. On stories like Fran's, the owner of the obliterated Frogurt store, who is fed up, angry, and ready for retribution.

Join Fran and her new acquaintances Octavio and Anu, as they form an unlikely trio of nobodies on a mission against corporate overlords.

Blag your way through this thrilling five-part story full of gun-toting goons, a vicious vault monster, and delicious tacos.

Face down the capitalist warmongers, and decide the fates of Fran and her motley crew.

The Setting

The neon-lit metropolitan Meridian City could not be more different from the harsh desert wastelands of Pandora, or the moons of Eden, we know from previous Borderlands games. Not only does this cosmopolitan setting give insight into the everyday lives of civilians in the Borderlands. It also opens up whole new areas for gameplay.

Sure, city life is gritty. But with greater population density and more access to resources, it also provides citizens with the opportunity for leisure activities that don't revolve around constantly having to fight for their lives. This gives the game a very different feel, as characters can go shopping, grab a bite to eat, or update their social media.

Usefully for our protagonists, city life also allows for anonymity. It allows for three average Joes to embark on a mission to change the course of history, without anyone giving them, or their activities, the slightest bit of notice.

Is Borderlands 3 Open World?

This leads us to the question, is Borderlands 3 open world? The answer is yes, and no. The best way to describe Borderlands 3 is as an open-world-esque first-person-shooter. So why the esque? Well that's because, much like the other Borderlands titles, Borderlands 3 hosts a sizable game world that's split into different zones and sections to be unlocked as you progress through the main story. This means that your access to different sections is linked to your progression as you undertake main missions and work your way through the game.

Unlikely Heroes

A good story needs good characters. And New Tales From The Borderlands is a good story.

We've met Fran, the fierce frogurt-slinging fireball who is furious with the Tediore CEO for wrecking her livelihood. Now let's meet Anu, an altruistic scientist who works on a gun manufacturer's starship but dreams of a world without violence. And Octavio, Anu's diametrically opposed brother, a cynical street-wise wheeler-and-dealer who seeks fame and fortune, despite a distinct lack of talent or enterprise.

Each with their own motivation, and in a story structure that lead writer Doug Lieblich describes as an 'interactive sitcom', these three unlikely heroes join forces, somewhat comically, to save the world from corporate domination.

Character Gameplay

We love the scope for lols in New Tales From The Borderlands. But how does the gameplay work with three unique and contrasting characters?

Head writer Lin Joyce describes the group interaction at the heart of the game as like playing “a kind of 4D chess," just applied to narrative role-playing. Joyce explains that "what I might think I would do as Anu, might be true to Anu, but it might make Octavio mad. Then, I’m also playing as Octavio.”

To make play easier, the points at which the characters switch are down to the game. But the decisions and reactions of each character at any point are your call. It is this dynamic of character inter-play that forms the engine of the game and provides the driving force of the story.

Every Choice Matters

In New Tales From The Borderlands, the developers were keen to ensure that every choice you make counts. This includes the dialogue that shapes the group dynamics of your trio.

According to Lead Writer Doug Lieblich, dialogue choices are 'like bullets coming out of a gun'. They have an impact, and once you say something, you cannot take it back.

Choices do not necessarily always involve action, however. Sometimes silence, or doing nothing, can be a perfectly valid response to a situation or comment, and lead to its own consequences. Indeed, Lin Joyce, Head of writing, reveals there to be fun gems hidden in some of the silent options!

Although of significance, recognizing the consequences of your actions is not always immediately apparent. In New Tales Of The Borderlands, developers have deliberately done away with prompts such as "[This character] will remember that", which pop up in most narrative games after an impactful choice has been made. The absence of such game-led cues creates uncertainty about what decision led to what. This encourages replay and discussion amongst players as you experiment with different choices, as opposed to quick-fire reloads at obvious tracking points if a path of action is unsuccessful.
