Kalypso Media's Matchpoint - Tennis Championships is coming out today, on July 7, and it offers a uniquely contemporary tennis gaming experience. Down below, we'll explain why this game is as interesting as it is, but more importantly, we've got an awesome giveaway set up as well! Matchpoint - Tennis Championships Final Preview
There are two major reasons why someone may consider getting Matchpoint - Tennis Championships, the way we see it. The first is rather obvious: we needed a good new tennis game on PC, and there's a non-insignificant audience eager to play it! The simple truth is that tennis gaming is underserved in general. You'd think that a mainstream sport such as tennis would see way more representation in video gaming, especially with how physical and dynamic matches can get.
Matchpoint thankfully seems to understand this. The game's career mode takes the center stage here, though extra "skirmish" and multiplayer modes come into play, too. Progression is akin to that of a proper RPG, and if you're the sort of player that really dives into their virtual persona's growth, you'll love the systems on show.
Back to the point at hand, though, the second major draw of Matchpoint is - customization! That's right, this game is all about you creating your own custom tennis star from the ground up. We're talking in-depth character customization, an immense number of cosmetic items, special equipment, rackets, and more.
Naturally, neither of these will pull the game's weight if the gameplay isn't up to par. Thankfully, there are a few early reviews already in, and we've got good news!
What do the early reviews say about Matchpoint?
"Matchpoint: Tennis Championships provides a good game of tennis," said Gamespew's Richard Seagrave. "It feels strategic, rewarding, and most importantly, fun. It also has an interesting rivalry system that periodically reveals the strengths and weaknesses of your opponents," he explained. In general, Seagrave was rather positive of the game, and cited the severe lack of proper, contemporary competition as a major problem in this particular sports gaming niche.
More reviews should be pouring in on Metacritic over the course of the day, so be sure to stay tuned as we get more highlights in!
As it currently stands, however, those who've played Matchpoint feel good about it, and we may finally have an awesome new tennis gaming franchise at our hands.
