Having only just come out in Steam Early Access, Manor Lords is an astonishingly good - albeit unfinished - medieval city-builder. If you're hoping to get a general sense of what the game is all about, we recommend checking out our comprehensive Everything-We-Know article first. If you already know what you're about, then you're probably looking to start building your first village! Well, bad news: your first year in Manor Lords is a huge pain, and unless you get your proverbial house in order, you'll get in trouble really quickly.

Thankfully, that's where this guide comes into the picture! Having spent over a dozen hours playing Manor Lords already, we've got a solid sense of how the game functions by now, and we've got a fairly solid early project build order for you to peruse. Down below, we'll explain how to make the most out of your first township, and which buildings to set up first in Manor Lords.

Which Buildings to Set Up First in Manor Lords?

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of what's what, here's the order of building that works for us in Manor Lords:

  • #1: Purchase a new Hitching Post
  • #2: Build a Hunting Camp
  • #3: Build a Forager Hut
  • #4: Link your starting camp with your new huts and assign families to each of the three aforementioned builds
  • #5: Build a Logging Camp and assign a family to it
  • #6: Start building Birgage Plots
  • #7: Set up a Marketplace

Simple, right? If you think about it, what you've done here is to provide your starter village with all the necessities they need to stay alive for any prolonged period. The reason why we recommend setting up a Hitching post and taking up a second Ox is that doing so massively speeds up your logistics, making each subsequent task that much faster and easier. That's also why you need to keep up with building those roads, but Manor Lords' powerful road tool makes short work of that.

Back to the topic at hand, with a solid building process, access to food, water, and wood, and a marketplace to keep the money flowing, you've got all it takes to survive long enough to be able to thrive. And that's really what it's all about in Manor Lords.

Do remember that the specific placement of each of your early-game buildings matters a fair bit, too. Make sensible choices here: you want your loggers to be close to the woods, and you want your foragers and hunters further out still. Once you've got this all figure out, the next step will be to figure out your storage facilities (i.e. the Granary) and the like, but that's a tad more advanced and something you'll likely figure out after you've spent some time following this build shortlist!
