June has been a hell of a month, hasn't it? Between the re-release of Mass Effect and an all-new Resident Evil, we got treated to a whole bunch of exciting developments. Scarlet Nexus, for one, surprised us with how genuinely good it ended up being. But! It's time to look ahead, as July 2021 games await. We are here today to cover precisely just that.

Our focus for this article lies on the four major game releases we've currently got in our sights:

  • Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin
  • Total War: Warhammer 2 - the Silence & The Fury
  • The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
  • The Ascent

July is, generally speaking, a tad bit slower than, say, May 2021 was. We're okay with that, though. After all, we do need a bit of a breather before the end of the year. You've seen the E3 2021 announcements, right? Whole hecking lot of things going on, and there's lots to be excited about.

Naturally, if you're not too big on hype, you may wish to look back and pick out some games to play right this instant. We've assembled a list of titles that are perfect for summer gaming, for example. Alternatively, you may also be interested in our awesome list of non-violent games that you're going to want to try out sometime. If not, carry right on!

July 2021 Games Overview

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin / July 9th

While there's no mainline Monster Hunter game coming out on PC this year, Wings of Ruin sure does wear its pedigree on its sleeve. This is a follow-up to the original MH: Stories title, and it's essentially designed to continue the narrative and improve upon the core gameplay systems in virtually every way possible.

We've covered what MH: Stories 2 is and what it isn't in a separate article, but at its core, this is a monster-collecting turn-based RPG. There's a bunch of content promised already, and we've got absolutely no reason to doubt Capcom on this front. Early previews suggest that we're in for a great game, although it is entirely different from regular Monster Hunter titles you may have gotten used to.

Total War: Warhammer 2 - The Silence & The Fury / July 14th

Not a game per se, The Silence & The Fury is the long-awaited (and final) expansion pack for Total War: Warhammer 2. With the sequel well underway, it makes sense that Creative Assembly would want to wrap things up on a high note.

Word on the street is that The Silence & The Fury will come with a massive Beastmen rework. We could definitely see that being the case. Remember the Wood Elves retrofit? That was amazing, and we're hoping that CA can deliver the content of a similar caliber with this DLC. Aside from that, there's not much to say at this point in time. We expect that it's all hands on deck with Warhammer 3 at this point. It's important that Warhammer 2 is left in a good state before developers can move on, though. Remember that all three games will combine into one massive campaign at the end of the day.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles / July 27th

Another major Capcom release, this one. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is going to be a 19th-century rendition of the classic Ace Attorney setup. Except... this time, players will have the chance to work alongside a Sherlock Holmes expy! From what we've seen so far, TGAAC aims to deliver on all fronts! Doubly so, since this is - in fact - a duology of games.

Even for those of us who might not have had ample experience with the series, Capcom promises that the new assistance features will get us up to speed in no time at all. Perhaps this will be the perfect PC starting point for future fans of the franchise? We'll need to wait and see. One thing's for sure, though: this is going to be an Ace Attorney game through and through, and we can't wait to start shouting 'OBJECTION!' willy-nilly in court.

The Ascent / July 29th

From what we've seen so far, The Ascent is - at its core - a cyberpunk Grim Dawn or, say, Diablo game. While our first experience with the game suggested a rogue-lite experience,  this doesn't actually seem to be the case. Instead, we'll get to explore a far-future cyberpunk dystopia where exciting twin-stick gunplay combines with classic RPG exploration and progression tropes. Sounds kinda neat, doesn't it?

Of particular note is that The Ascent features destructible environments and an open-world sandbox that players are free to rampage through. We're getting both single-player and cooperative multiplayer modes of play, though the specific extent of the game's online features yet remains to be shown off. The gameplay trailers all look amazing, though, and that's basically all we're interested in. As tired as cyberpunk might seem in 2021, there's still plenty of life in this particular niche.

July 2021 Gaming Events Schedule

RTX At Home / July 8 - July 17

Though not primarily a gaming event, RTX has always been a major driver this time of the year. It's set to deliver a whopping 10 days of exciting entertainment that relates not only to video games, but also animation, live-action content, comic books, and a huge deal more. This event is a bit more general than you may be used to, but it's a whole lot of fun.

Games for Change Festival / July 12 - July 14

A virtual convention that celebrates gaming through the lens of social justice and equity, G4C2021 allows anyone to join a huge global community of game developers, educators, students, and scientists to view the medium from a different, more novel perspective. This one we're most looking forward to, as it promises heaps of interesting content no matter how technical your knowledge of gaming might be.

GDC 2021 / July 19 - July 23

This year's Game Developers Conference is going to be made available online in full. Now, it's worth pointing out that GDC usually doesn't really have much in the way of consumer-oriented announcements, as it's primarily a developer-focused convention. Regardless, if you're intrigued by the prospect, be sure to give it a watch towards the end of the month!
