Expeditions: A MudRunner Game is one of our most hotly anticipated games of early 2024, and it's easy to see why if you're even remotely interested in overlanding, big trucks, or mud. In most ways, it is a true follow-up (and a sidegrade!) to the classic MudRunner and Snowrunner titles, and we've already discussed the merits of the title to a substantial extent. Today, though, we're most interested in one specific thing: whether Expeditions is a true-to-form open-world game, or if it's mission-based like its predecessors.

And, really, as with most things MudRunner, the truth is a tad bit more complicated than you'd probably expect. Let us explain!

Is Expeditions an Open-World Game or Not?

As was the case with a recent highly regarded driving-based game, Pacific Drive, the obvious expectation is that you'd just be driving around willy-nilly on a wide open-world map, exploring to your heart's content. Well, that isn't quite what's up with Expeditions after all.

Notably, instead of letting players loose on a humongous map to just do stuff, Ubisoft-style, Expeditions is a fair bit more focused and structured than that. Even though there is an open-world free-roam mode to enjoy at your own behest, it won't be unlocked for you from the get-go. Instead, before you're free to muck about however you want, you'll need to complete each map's respective main expedition.

There are three main launch-day maps in Expeditions: A MudRunner Game: Little Colorado, Arizona, and the Carpathians. Of course, you will still be exploring the open-world levels themselves as you progress through the expedition, but you won't be able to go wherever and do whatever until the expeditions are sorted out proper.

Something to keep in mind, though, is that simply wrapping up a main expedition won't mean you're done with an entire map. Not at all: much of the game's optional content is reliant on open-world accessibility. In other words, you will keep coming back to each of the three maps after you've unlocked open-world free-form mode. Whether to unlock new parts, vehicles, or entirely new missions and objectives - that's going to be your choice!
