What exactly is the Elden Ring Size? I mean, it's pretty darn obvious that even as open world games go, Elden Ring is a massive world with a huge map size to explore. However, you may be wondering just how huge Elden Ring PC is i.e. how big the Elden Ring file size / Elden Ring download size is.

Quite simply, the Bandai Namco phenomenon of Elden Ring PC is big in more ways than one. A fair few more ways, in fact. To that end, we decided that it may be worth exploring the hard numbers this time around. We've broken the game down into disparate categories that, when analyzed and put back together, ought to tell us quite a lot about the inner functionality and - indeed - the size of the mighty Elden Ring PC game.

Some of these are pretty straightforward and, arguably, uninteresting on their own, such as the Elden Ring download size. Others, however, are way more arcane. How do you figure out how many quests there are in a FromSoftware game, such as Elden Ring after all? We'll attempt to answer your questions!

With all of the above in mind, join us for this quick, yet curious look at the hard data behind the size of the Elden Ring game. We promise you'll learn something new along the way as we fill you in on what to expect!

Elden Ring Download Size / Elden Ring File Size

What is the Elden Ring Download Size?

The Elden Ring download size / file size is 60 GB in total, which is very reasonable considering the size of the game. It doesn't therefore require too much disc space, which you'll be pleased to know. Indeed, you'll only need system requirements of approximately 60 GB of free storage space to play the Elden Ring game and explore the Elden Ring lands. In comparison, Assassin's Creed Valhalla with its immense Dawn of Ragnarok expansion pack should be almost twice as big, with a file size / download size of 100ish GB in total, requiring at least 100 GB of free storage disk space to play the game.

It's a curious discrepancy because we can assure you with utmost certainty that the open world Elden Ring download size isn't much smaller than Valhalla. In fact, depending on how you qualify original content, the Elden Ring world is potentially several times as substantial, despite its smaller download size, but that's a topic for another day.

The trick lies in asset quality, really. As aesthetically striking and visually pleasing as the Elden Ring game map might be, FromSoftware hasn't ever been particularly meticulous about the technical side of its games. To that end, it's easy enough to create more free storage space with the Elden Ring game when your textures and assets aren't as detailed as those used in some other games might be, thereby reducing the Elden Ring download size.

How big is the Elden Ring map?

Summer Game Sale 2023: Article Pic 1

The total Explored Elden Ring Map Size is 79 km² or 30.5 square miles. In comparative terms, it's bigger than the map of Skyrim, but not as big as, say, Assassin's Creed Odyssey or Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Having said that, the exact file size / map size / Elden Ring download size of The Lands Between has been subject to many heated discussions online. The problem with the open-world map size of Elden Ring is that the map keeps growing. No matter what you do, or how many bosses you kill in the game - it's going to loolike you've seen it all, only for yet another massive region to appear on the map moments later increasing the world / map size with an even bigger map.

That's how the developers at Bandai Namco and FromSoftware roll, we suppose. And honestly, it's hard not to be giddy when a game map such as Elden Ring is as fun, engaging, and exciting as Elden Ring which keeps giving you more stuff to do and areas to explore with a humungous world and an expanding map size. So, no gaming complaints here, especially with such a reasonable download size!

Now, this makes the total over-world of the Elden Ring PC game pretty hard to assess unless you've already beaten the game in full. Thankfully, Reddit user Lusty-Batch has come up with a way to assess and compare The Lands Between with Grand Theft Auto V!

Specifically, Lusty-Batch used the comparative size of the mount - Torrent - and a bridge to come up with a rough estimate of lengths. Then, they traveled across the entire Elden Ring over-world map, only to finally come up with a hard number for the map size: 79 km².

In practice, this means that Elden Ring's open world map size is bigger than that of the Grand Theft Auto V game. How about that?! And, yes, this is without considering the underground areas of the map. Take that as you will... and don't forget, even with all this content, the Elden Ring download size is only 60 GB!

Longevity of Elden Ring; How Long to Beat: 50 - 100 hours

So, we know that the content is massive, and that the download size is pretty darn good, so how long should the open world Elden Ring take to complete? Even though someone managed to finish the Elden Ring game map in under three hours, this isn't a realistic expectation. Speedrunners will keep doing what speedrunners do, and the rest of the gaming audience will play their games and engage with the Elden Ring world at a more realistic pace. That "realistic" pace may well take 50ish hours for most players enjoying Elden Ring.

Note, too, that this goes just for playing Elden Ring's main quest/campaign, and doesn't take into account all the different exploration paths, unlocks, secrets, and more that exist in the Elden Ring world. Early estimates claim that it will easily take over 100 hours to get to 100% in Elden Ring, which does seem appropriate enough, given our own experience with this open world game.

As with any other contemporary FromSoftware game, the specific playtime you get will with the Elden Ring world simply depends on how proficient you are at the game. Some players may find particular bosses extremely difficult and may need to go explore other paths before bulking up enough to defeat said encounters. It's a fun gameplay loop and hours go by like they're nothing, and that's what counts in my world, especially when the Elden Ring download size is so reasonable!

Weapon Classes & Individual Armaments in Elden Ring: 33 Categories

With a download size of 60 GB, what can we expect? Well, if there's one thing we know for sure about Bandai Namco and FromSoft by now, it's that the company goes all in for their games! Much as was the case with Elden Ring's overworld map, it's hard to comprehend just how many different weapon types there are in Elden Ring, let alone consider all the unique items that fall into each category of the game.

No, really, there is a whopping 33 disparate weapon classes available at this time. Who even came up with all of them? So, it should be pretty darn obvious why we're yet to come up with a proper endgame weapon guide for the Elden Ring game - there are just too many of them to seriously test and consider yet.

Keeping the above in mind, we've got no hope of listing all the unique weapons available in the Elden Ring world. We will, however, list all the categories. Then, you can pick and choose whichever ones you'd like to create the most and spec out your character to use them properly.

  • Axe
  • Ballista
  • Light Bow
  • Claw
  • Colossal Sword
  • Colossal Weapon
  • Crossbow
  • Curved Greatsword
  • Curved Sword
  • Dagger
  • Fist
  • Flail
  • Glintstone Staff
  • Great Axe
  • Great Bow
  • Great Spear
  • Greatsword
  • Halberd
  • Hammer
  • Heavy Thrusting Sword
  • Katana
  • Reaper
  • Sacred Seal
  • Spear
  • Straight Sword
  • Thrusting Sword
  • Torch
  • Twinblade
  • Warhammer
  • Whip
  • Small Shield
  • Medium Shield
  • Great Shield

"Does a shield really count as a weapon," you might be thinking. Well, let us tell you - it sure as hell does in The Lands Between, and it's strangely potent if you use it properly.

Arm or Sets & Special Items: 80ish Sets

By our count, and according to what data has already been mined from Elden Ring (because collecting everything is virtually impossible) there are between 75 and 80 unique armor sets in the open world Elden Ring game. Let that number sink right in. 80 armor sets! All unique, all different, and all pretty darn badass. And without a crazily large download size.

Naturally, not each and every armor can be worn effectively by each and every character spec in Elden Ring. Some of Elden Ring's character specs may need to stick with lightweight cloth-based sets, while others will have enough strength and vitality to wear even the hardiest, most cumbersome armor available. So, it's wise to decide early on what to spec your character for and leave experimentation for when your base stats are already high enough.

Note that, on top of full sets, there are some standalone armor pieces, too. The kind of stuff you can mix and match with your regular sets to keep things interesting. So, really, there are hundreds upon hundreds of armor pieces to collect in the Elden Ring world. Hey, if that's your thing - we won't judge!

Quests, Activities, Points of Interest: N/A

How Big is Elden Ring: Article Pic 7

We're going to be completely honest with you here: pretty much nobody knows just how many quests there are in the Elden Ring game at this time. This is because FromSoftware doesn't actually do quests the way you might expect to see them in a different RPG. In Dark Souls and, indeed, Elden Ring, these are just optional triggers that you may or may not end up interacting with.

Now, in Elden Ring, things are a bit clearer than in Dark Souls in that it's usually pretty obvious what's leading from one main campaign encounter to the next (unlike Dark Souls!). With the sort of stuff you'd call a "side-quest," though? No such luck.

The community has managed to identify just over a dozen definable quests in the Elden Ring world so far. There's not a single doubt in our mind that this barely scratches the surface of the massive Elden Ring, however, especially if we consider just how ridiculously massive the game is in almost every other respect.

There's a bunch of memes riffing on the obscurity of Elden Ring already, and it's hard not to agree with them. Some players will enjoy Elden Ring's air of mystery that pervades almost each and every activity in Elden Ring, others might not. It's there though, and you bet that there's much we're yet to discover. This game is massive, yet the Elden Ring download size is only 60 GB - what more could you ask for?!

Boss Encounters

How Big is Elden Ring: Article Pic 3

With a download size of 60 GB, what are Elden Ring's boss encounters like? You'll be pleased to know that there are just over a dozen completely unique, major boss fights in Elden Ring, which is pretty much par the course for a FromSoftware release of a game of this caliber:

  • Margit, the Fell Omen
  • Godrick the Grafted
  • Red Wolf of Radagon
  • Renalla, Queen of the Full Moon
  • Godfrey, First Elden Lord
  • Morgott, the Omen King
  • The Fire Giant
  • Maliketh, the Black Blade
  • Godfrey, First Elden Lord (twice, trust us on this one)
  • Hoarah Loux, Warrior
  • Radagon of the Golden  Order
  • Elden Beast

Each of these fights is almost completely different from one another, and though certain characters do reappear at different stages, they evolve from one encounter to another and are in all but name a completely unique boss encounter.

As for the rest of the game, surely you've noticed already that there are way more bosses than just the dozen-or-so main ones by now. Well, if you're intent on beating Elden Ring through and through, you need to be ready to deal with no less than 120 in total. These range from reasonably unique to "regular guy made bigger, with a health bar," but we're going to forgive FromSoft for reusing content where it makes perfect sense to do so.

Overall, your character build is going to get tested again and again, and there's just so much stuff to do in Elden Ring that it's hard to keep track of it all. That may well be the point, however, and with a download size that doesn't take over your PC, we're more than happy.

Elden Ring's PC and system requirements

Singleplayer Games on PC: Elden Ring

Elden Ring's minimum recommended requirements aren't actually too bad considering its size. As stated above, the Elden Ring download size is 60 GB, requiring 60 GB of available storage space. The game's requirement for 12GB of RAM is rather high, however, as most games, including open-world ones, only require a minimum of 8GB. This means that PC gamers with budget-tier rigs may need to purchase an extra stick of DDR4 RAM for their PC.

With a download size of 60 GB, Elden Ring's minimum recommended requirements for your PC including the memory, intel core, and NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX graphics, are as follows:

  • 64-bit processor and operating system
  • OS: Windows 10
  • Processor: INTEL CORE I5-8400 or AMD RYZEN 3 3300X
  • Memory: 12 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1060 3 GB or AMD RADEON RX 580 4 GB
  • DirectX: Version 12
  • Storage: 60 GB available space
  • Sound Card: Windows Compatible Audio Device

For best results, however, Elden Ring's optimal recommended requirements for PCs are:

  • 64-bit processor and operating system
  • OS: Windows 10/11
  • Processor: INTEL CORE I7-8700K or AMD RYZEN 5 3600X
  • Memory: 16 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 1070 8 GB or AMD RADEON RX VEGA 56 8 GB
  • DirectX: Version 12
  • Storage: 60 GB available space
  • Sound Card: Windows Compatible Audio Device

Conclusion: How Big is Elden Ring, really?

Bigger than Grand Theft Auto V yet with a download size of only 60 GB, Elden Ring is pretty honking cool!

All cheekiness aside, there was never any real doubt of the fact that FromSoftware / Bandai Namco would deliver a massive open world game. The thing about Elden Ring PC, however, is that it keeps continuously growing as you progress. Some players will have noticed as much during Elden Ring's early progression sequences when the map just keeps getting more and more black sections for them to uncover.

I mean, just as you think you've killed all four of Elden Ring's major bosses, believing that you're ready for the endgame... bam. Another half a dozen bosses are made available, the map is now twice as large, and there are literally hundreds of extra encounters to learn and clear. That's the Elden Ring game for you! Fortunately, the Elden Ring download size / file size is actually very reasonable considering how huge the game is.

With a download size that we approve of, really, the only actual downside is the legendarily shoddy PC support for Elden Ring, but that can be fixed easily enough. Make no mistake, Elden Ring is a once-in-a-generation type of adventure. Indeed, with a download size that won't break your PC, you'd be making a mistake if you were to ignore Elden Ring!
