It's time! At long, long last, we're about to make a grand, triumphant return to The Lands Between as From Software and Bandai Namco announced the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion pack for Elden Ring. This has, of course, been a very long time coming, as it's been exactly two years since Elden Ring came out at the date of publication of this article.

In the time interim, granted, we did have lots of fun with Elden Ring's awesome mods and Hidetaka Miyazaki and G. R. R. Martin's impeccable lore. Still, nothing quite beats a first-party DLC for a From Software action RPG, does it now? Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree PC release is slated for June 21, 2024, but now's the time to catch up on the facts, and we've got just what you need.

Everything You Need to Know About Shadow of the Erdtree on PC

Obviously, the simple fact that we're finally getting an Elden Ring DLC is more than enough to get us giddy. The Shadow of the Erdtree is, broadly, being developed in the same vein as all the other mainline From Software expansion packs: it'll require the base Elden Ring to run, and you will need to have progressed a fair bit before being able to access it.

In fact, we've already learned that, in order to start the Shadow of the Erdtree content (i.e. access the alternative Lands Between dimension) you'll need to touch Miquella's cocoon after killing Mohg, Lord of Blood in the Mohgwyn Palace. That is a very late-game encounter, which means From Software isn't going to pull any punches in the Erdtree expansion.

With that all out of the way, there's much we don't yet know about the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, so we'll get to covering all the bits that we do know, instead.

PC Release Date

As we mentioned before, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is coming out on June 21, 2024. It's a bit of a wait until we finally get to play the new content, then, but hey, remember that you do need to reach Miquella to access the DLC. Best get your grinding shoes on and get to it, eh?

Pre-Order Bonus

If you're in the market to pre-order the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, we've got more good news to share. Notably, 2Game offers you a delightful pre-release discount if you make your purchase before June 21, and you get exclusive access to the unique Miquella's Rune Gesture.

For collectors, however, we believe the special Premium Bundle may be the more interesting choice...

Shadow of the Erdtree Premium Bundle

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree Premium Bundle is the Collector's Edition/Deluxe Edition of the DLC, and it comes with the phenomenal digital artbook and the full soundtrack for the expansion pack. For regular players, this won't be a huge deal for the price premium, but if you're a From Software buff or a lore aficionado, we believe this to be a must-have.

Content Overview

Finally, now that we've gone over the technical bits, it's time to talk shop. Or, content, as it were. This is the single most important feature of the DLC, after all, and given its price - $40 or your regional equivalent - you obviously want to get your money's worth when all is said and done. Down below, we've assembled a fact sheet of everything we've learned about the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC so far:

  • From Software's biggest, most content-rich expansion yet
  • Set in a new, alternative region of the Lands Between that's roughly Limgrave-sized, albeit far more content-dense
  • More than 10 all-new boss fights
  • Eight new weapon categories added to the game
  • Extremely difficult, Malenia-tier encounters
  • One of the new sub-regions is a poisonous swamp

So, in summary, it definitely is big, but the specifics we'll need to wait a tad bit longer for. This should give you a broad idea of what to expect out of Shadow of the Erdtree, though, and you know we'll keep you informed as more news breaks. Stay tuned!
