Naturally, you might be feeling a bit stuck, which is a big deal considering that secret levels are part of DOOM's core gameplay. Well, that and navigating through dark corridors filled with decaying dead carnage and extreme radiation levels, encountering pure evil at every turn, and narrowly surviving deadly traps as the only experienced survivor looking for key cards, switches, and ultimately the map's exit! Luckily, we're here to help.

Welcome to our DOOM 64 secret levels guide. Oh, and as an added bonus, we'll be talking about how to find the Unmaker in DOOM 64. So without further ado, as the dark corridors stand motionless, let's get started!

How many secret levels are there on DOOM 64?

There are a total of four DOOM 64 secret levels you can find throughout the PC version of the game. Each one is better hidden than the last. Not to mention you'll have to find all of them if you want to obtain the full power of DOOM 64 Unmaker. But more on these gameplay elements later. So let's take it level by level, shall we?

DOOM 64 Map01 secret level – Staging Area

DOOM 64 secret level Map 32 Hectic

Surprisingly enough, the first secret level in DOOM 64 is hidden within the very first level of the game. As promised before, getting to the Staging Area secret level is quite a challenge. What you'll want to do first is clear out all the enemies from the level. It is by no means necessary but it will make your life a lot easier.

Once that's done (or before if you're confident in your FPS skills) the next step is to find and shoot every explosive barrel in the map. Yes, this is quite an explosive secret. There is a total of 10 of them. Another little tip: start from the end of the level and work your way to the start. That way you'll have more time to run into the teleporter which appears at the beginning of the level.

Once you destroy the barrels the teleporter sends you to Map32: Hectic. There you will find the rocket launcher much earlier than you're supposed to, providing you with a major power boost early in the game. However, be careful not to go for items scattered randomly as they're rigged with traps. And decaying dead carnage, monster death sprites, and other incarnations of pure evil. This is DOOM 64, after all! I mean, what else would you expect from the DOOM series?

DOOM 64 Map04 secret level – Holding Area

The second can be found in the fourth level of DOOM 64– the Holding Area. Luckily, this one is a bit easier to find than the first one as it requires less barrel explosions. Once again, you'll want to clear out the level first. However, this time it's because the secret level is hidden near the end of the map.

Once you're almost at the end of the level you'll find a door with some columns lined up to it. Take a look around and you should see a platform above you from which you can get a good look at the columns. Make your way up there and you'll notice some switches on it. In order to access the Map04 secret level you have to press the switches in a specific order. Once you do that, enter the teleporter next to the exit and sprint over the columns to enter the secret level.

The order in which you have to press the switches is (when looking at them left to right) is:

3 – 1 – 2 – 4

Doing everything above will take you to the Map29: Outpost Omega secret level. Once you're there make sure to pick up the Demon Key. This is highly important so make sure not to miss it.

DOOM 64 Map12 secret level – Altar of Pain

DOOM 64 secret levels Map 30 The Lair

The third of the DOOM 64 secret levels is hidden in the Altar of Pain map. This time you don't have to clear the entire level before being able to access the secret level. Actually, you can do so as soon as you obtain the yellow key. Once you have it take a look around until you find a pillar with a soulsphere on it. It should be visible from the area where you collected the key.

Once you see it make a running jump towards it so you can land on top of the pillar. Once you're there open up your map to find a surprise. There should be an arrow pointing you towards a hidden wall. So go full Harry Potter on it and run straight at it. Doing so will put you in a secret room which you'll have to clear out. Once everything in there is dead you can continue to Map30: The Lair.

This one is definitely the easiest of all DOOM 64 secret levels to find. However, that doesn't make it any less important. Once you're there make sure to pick up the second Demon Key.

DOOM 64 Map18 secret level – Spawned Fear

DOOM 64 secret level Map 31 Into the Void

The final of the DOOM 64 secret levels is found in the Spawned Fear level. This one is probably the hardest one to get into as it is not just about doing the right thing at the right time, but rather requires you to listen and react in time to things that happen around you.

So here is how you do it. Go through the yellow door and down some stairs. From there, you should see another set of stairs going up. Start going up and listen carefully. Once you're about halfway to the top you should hear the sound of doors opening. Quickly run back through the yellow door then take a left twice. You should be in a room that looks like a cave (which you should have visited before). There is going to be a teleporter there which you should run into in order to get to the Map31: Into the Void secret level.

Once you're in there be very careful as this is the most difficult secret level to beat. Once again, make sure to pick up the final Demon Key. And with that done, you can move on to obtaining the Unmaker.

How do you get the Unmaker in DOOM 64?

DOOM 64 Unmaker

The Unmaker is the most powerful weapon in DOOM 64, making its only official appearance prior to DOOM Eternal. It is a weapon that puts the BFG and indeed all the weapons from earlier games to shame. So how do you get the Unmaker in DOOM 64? Well, you can actually find it in two places in the final game. The earliest possible place is Map29: Outpost Omega secret level. In fact, if you've been following the DOOM 64 secret levels guide from above you probably found it already.

However, if you're looking to find the Unmaker in a regular DOOM 64 level, it can be done in Map12: Altar of Pain. The Unmaker in the Altar of Pain level is not exactly hidden. It is put smack dab in the middle of the altar, surrounded with five demon guards.

The second regular level where you can find the Unmaker is the last level of DOOM 64 – The Absolution. It will be in the room you start off in, along with a bunch of ammo and every other weapon. Not exactly a secret, is it?

Finally, if you're playing through the Lost Levels expansion, you can find the Unmaker in Map39: Final Judgement. Given that the Lost Levels expansion has you starting without any weapons or upgrades you collected before, this is the only place you can find the Unmaker in it, along with the three Demon Keys. All of them are scattered about the level, so make sure to check every nook and cranny to get your hands on them.

The role Demon Keys play in the power of Unmaker

DOOM 64 Demon Key how to get Unmaker

Here is the thing about the Unmaker – it's really not that strong when you first get your hands on it. However, it does get progressively stronger with each Demon Key you obtain. Each Demon Key will give the Unmaker a specific upgrade, gradually turning it into the most potent weapon prior to DOOM Eternal.

The first Demon Key will turn the Unmaker into a rapid-fire weapon by increasing the laser speed. The second Demon Key will add another laser when firing the Unmaker, although this one will have a minor spread. Physics, am I right? The third and final Demon Key adds yet another laser when firing for a total of three. This one will have a major spread and ensure you can cover a lot of area with no effort at all. And that's how you get the most powerful weapon in DOOM 64, and indeed one of the most potent instruments of all the classic DOOM games!

As the dark corridors stand motionless, and you find yourself the only experienced survivor surrounded by extreme radiation levels, have fun battling decaying dead creatures and encountering pure evil, and I'll see you next time with some more exhilarating computer games to discuss!
