For many of us who are equipped with an honest-to-goodness PC gaming handheld, such as the Steam Deck, the decision to purchase a new game often boils down to whether it runs on said handheld in the first place! To that end, we decided the time was right for us to test Expeditions: Mudrunner on the Steam Deck right away, giving you a baseline of what to expect if you, too, give it a shot. We've got good news and bad news in that regard, though it's definitely mainly good!

Notably, Expeditions: Mudrunner is delightfully easy on PC hardware, as we discussed in our graphics settings guide yesterday. This, of course, is extremely useful for handheld gaming, as these devices come loaded with relatively low-end CPUs and GPUs running in a low-power envelope. Simply by setting things down a notch or two, though, you'll find that it's easy to play this game on the Steam Deck, no matter what!

For one, it's important to mention that Expeditions: Mudrunner works on the Steam Deck out of the box. You'll need to do absolutely no extra fiddling about if you just want to play the game at a moment's notice, and the good news doesn't stop there! The game - scalable as it is - will work phenomenally well at the 'Medium' settings preset, and while we do have a few extra recommendations to get the most out of your experience, you can easily leave it at that and game on. Good stuff!

Here are some other things we recommend you tweak as well:

  • Cap your frame rate to 40-45 FPS
  • Cap your TDP to 10W or under, depending on the framerate you're targeting
  • Disable the 'Mirrors' and 'Volume Fog' settings
  • Set 'Ambient Occlusion' to 'Low'

Doing these tweaks will optimize your experience further. Though getting 60 FPS in Expeditions is well within the (basic) Steam Deck's reach, battery life can be a problem. With our custom settings, baseline Steam Deck owners can expect to get around two and a half hours' worth of playtime out of a full charge, however, which is right around the ideal balance of performance and longevity in our book. If you've upgraded to the Steam Deck OLED, however, you can expect way more life out of your device, so you're golden.
