Each and every Borderlands 3 gun manufacturer is quite distinct, but Hyperion takes the cake. Their over-designed, high-tech weapons open up stabilizers as they fire, for goodness' sake! There's a reason for that, of course, but it's always pretty darn obvious that it's a Hyperion you're using. Other manufacturers do get muddy from time to time, on the other hand. This company's defining characteristics are their guns' unique color schemes,  loads of moving parts, and the weird anti-recoil feature that makes using them a breeze.

Make no mistake, Borderlands 3 Hyperion guns do have a slight learning curve. Regardless, figuring them out usually makes them a mainstay in any player's inventory. Developing shotgunsSMGs, and sniper rifles, Hyperion is a company that delights in subverting expectations. Though they weren't necessarily top-tier in previous Borderlands games, they sure are in Borderlands 3!

With the next major content release focusing specifically on Borderlands 3 Hyperion, it's only natural that a weapon overview is in order. Let us tell you the how and why of this unique gun manufacturer.

Borderlands 3 Hyperion Design Language

Borderlands 3 Hyperion

Featuring mostly yellow, lime, and/or black colors, Hyperion guns stand out on the battlefield. They're also quite huge and bulky, and even their submachine guns tend to be larger than the majority of, say, Dahl rifles. It's an odd choice, but it certainly makes sense for a company as flashy as Hyperion to go big.

Hyperion firearms also have two additional defining features in Borderlands 3. Those are their reactive stabilizers and directional shields, with almost each and every one of their guns having both of these. Well touch upon the exact use of these upgrades later on, but the point is that these are some really flashy add-ons. They reveal just how high-tech Hyperion actually is, and how unique their selection of firearms has turned out to be.

Granted, we will say that liking Hyperion in Borderlands 3 is an acquired taste. At least as far as the design language goes, due to all the spiky and overlaid attachments, but if you, too, are a sucker for crazy sci-fi weapons, you can hardly go wrong with these guys.

How do Hyperion Guns work?

Borderlands 3 Hyperion

As we said before, function-wise, there are two defining features of a Hyperion gun:

  • reactive recoil stabilizers
  • directional energy shields

The recoil thing has transferred almost 1-1 from Borderlands 2, and veterans of the franchise are already well-acquainted with it. Basically, the further you empty your magazine, the more precise and less jumpy does your Hyperion gun get. This means that, for example, your awesome new Legendary Hivemind Submachine Gun will start off quite imprecise and with a hefty recoil, but the more rounds you get downrange, the more controllable will it get. It's inverse of how guns usually work, really. It's also why some might dislike Hyperion guns at first.

When you really familiarise yourself with this aspect for Hyperion machining, however, things start to fall into place. The incredibly powerful Legendary Butcher Shotgun (shown in the picture above) turns into a real meat-grinder as soon as you fire the first couple of shots. It's borderline useless at range, but in CQB? It's all you'll ever need.

More gimmicky is the shield feature, which kicks in whenever you aim-down-sights with a Hyperion gun. This attachment will project an energy shield directly in front of you, blocking some damage and improving your survivability. If you crouch and funnel your enemies into a relatively tight firing cone, it's really great. In most situations, however, you will be attacked from all sides, which greatly diminishes the shield's efficiency. Goes without saying that it's a pretty cool thing to show off, though!

The obvious bottom-line is that it will take a bit to get used to using Hyperion weapons, but the investment is very likely to pay off sooner, rather than later!

Where do Borderlands 3 Hyperion Weapons fit in your Inventory?

Borderlands 3 Hyperion

As we said before, there Borderlands 3 Hyperion has downsized their production of firearms to just three weapon archetypes:

  • Submachine Guns
  • Shotguns
  • Sniper Rifles

From our experience, Hyperion Shotguns will be the most universally useful of the bunch, though a number of Legendary-tier Submachine Guns perform admirably as well. Essentially, expect for Hyperion to occupy your close-range slots for the most part.

Hyperion Sniper Rifles tend to be even more gimmicky than you might expect. After all, you want your slow-firing, heavy-hitting rifle to be consistently precise and manageable, and with how dynamic Hyperion guns are, this just isn't the sort of experience you should expect. Far from it that they're useless! Do expect a heftier difficulty curve using them, mind.

Like any other gun manufacturer in Borderlands 3, Hyperion is a force to be reckoned with. When you get a really good roll, at least. We can't overstate just how awesome the Butcher is, however. Don't ditch it if it drops, because it's an absolute beast.
