Even though Journey to the Savage Planet came out only a few days ago it is already a strong contender for the title of best space exploration game. And that's amongst other things such as best co-op game or masterclass gameplay award. Journey to the Savage Planet is a breath of fresh air when it comes to gameplay loops. Meaning it doesn't force you to do anything you don't want to be doing. Instead, it carefully encourages you to explore everything the world has to offer while still letting you go about your business. And that's definitely something we want to see more of. So what makes Journey to the Savage Planet the best space exploration game? Let's take a look!
Best space exploration game lets you do whatever you want
When it comes to Journey to the Savage Planet the only thing that's mandatory is watching the intro video. And there isn't going to be a single person complaining about it because it is hilarious. Then comes the mission – to explore the planet. More importantly, to explore the tower on it appearing to be made by someone who came before you.
However, if you're not feeling up to doing it right away, you don't have to. After all, you're working for the 4th best interstellar exploration company, not THE best one. You can afford yourself some personal time. And what can your bosses do to you? They're 2000 light years away. Good luck to them trying to stop you from taking things at your own pace.
That's the beauty of Journey to the Savage Planet. It lets you do what you want on your own schedule. The only thing that limits which parts of the planet you can access is how much you've upgraded your suit. And here is the thing: the more you explore what you want the more upgrades you can get. If that doesn't make Journey to the Savage Planet a top contender for the best space exploration game I don't know what does.
Journey to the Savage Planet doesn't streamline your progress
There are hundreds of things to discover and document in Journey to the Savage Planet. If you want to find them all you'll have to make quite a bit of detours. Not to mention if you want to find materials such as alien metals or plants that raise your maximum HP. Finding all of them, and with that completing your role as a cartographer, is going to take some time.
However, unlike other games, Journey to the Savage Planet doesn't force your pace. There is not ticking a time bomb that's going to destroy the entire planet if you don't hurry up. No AI assistant or companion telling you to hurry up because there is a crisis waiting to be resolved. There isn't even a notice of termination coming from your employer if you take a bit longer than expected. Nothing, and nobody, is going to take you off this planet before you do everything you wanted to do.
This is something more games should be doing – letting you have your fun. Exploration is all about the sense of amazement and discovery. So why put a timer on it? That's something Journey to the Savage Planet understands and more games should take note about.
Humor that enhances the best space exploration game
If you thought the opening video was the last of laughs Journey to the Savage Planet will provide, you're wrong. So how does it go about making you laugh again and again? Through exploration, of course!
Scanning plants and animals will provide you with many hilarious descriptions. Don't worry, I won't spoil anything for you. But I'd just like to point out that there is a difference between miracle medicinal fruits and hallucinogenic berries. You'll most likely discover that one the hard way. Not to mention the joy of discovering a spherical bird that greets you by farting. Seamlessly combining the game's humor with its core gameplay is no easy task. And yet, Journey to the Savage Planet does it perfectly.
