Since we've really not had many high-profile RPGs come out since the start of the year, we thought it might be a good idea to remind you of the stuff we have from a while back! That's right: our pick of best RPGs 2021 is currently limited mostly to older games, though we're sure that's going to change with upcoming releases. In the meantime, join us as we take a trip down memory lane and see what the last couple of years have offered. These RPGs aren't just your regular kind, either. We've decided to come up with a list of games that, while role-playing titles, might not be the first thing that comes to mind.

We do have a few modern classics on the list, mind. Stuff like Greedfall, which took the world by storm upon release.

Our goal, until 2021 RPGs come out, is to show you a few of the best RPGs to start 2021 with. We think our choices reflect that, and that they will set you up for a year of gaming like no other. From man-eating sharks all the way to god-killing teenagers - there's a little bit of something for everyone here. Let's get started!

Best RPGs 2021: Evergreen Titles while we wait for more games...

Persona 4 Golden

Persona 4 Golden was the surprise release of the very first proper Persona game on PC, and it goes without saying that it was met with critical appraisal and fan adoration. Now, though we're yet to hear anything about the Persona 5 coming out on PC, we are getting Persona 5 Strikers later this year. Clearly, something's up over at ATLUS. Perhaps we'll be getting more of Persona on PC after all? In the meantime, P4G is basically the pinnacle of JRPG weirdness on PC. Get it, play it, and thank us later.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Another major JRPG offshoot on PC, Yakuza: Like a Dragon has taken a few important steps forward. A few steps back as well, granted, but it's the stuff we easily forgave when we saw just what a quality product Yakuza: Like a Dragon ended up being. What we're looking at here is essentially the perfect starting point for those who want to get into Yakuza, but just don't know how. The combat is... different. Appreciably so. However, we found ourselves enjoying the game all the same.

Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord

Bannerlord is, at its core, precisely what TaleWorlds promised the long-awaited Mount & Blade 2 would be. Mount & Blade, but better. Almost entirely unique on the market in what it attempts to do, Bannerlord is a prime example of alternative history fiction at its best. Here we have a huge, huge sandbox world on some other continent that's set on some other planet that's now undergoing its medieval age. Take control over a character that's exactly what you want them to be (nothing more, nothing less), and make a name for yourself. Or don't! Mount & Blade lets you do whatever. Unique and a must-play, we'll leave it at that.

Horizon: Zero Dawn

Didn't think Horizon: Zero Dawn was an RPG? Think again! It's a way more action-focused game than, say, Bannerlord, but it still has all the hallmarks of a good RPG. An interesting and engaging storyline peppered with fascinating developments and characters, a unique sandbox game-world that keeps you coming back for more over and over again, several cool progression systems that eventually let you build the protagonist up into a veritable powerhouse... yeah, no, this is an RPG alright. And what an RPG it is! The latest patches cleared out all the launch-day issues with had with Horizon a while back, and now all that's left is for us to recommend it to anything and anyone. It's great!

Monster Sanctuary

A Metroidvania that takes clear inspiration from one of Nintendo's strongest franchises, Monster Sanctuary is also a veritable role-playing game no matter how you slice it. Just imagine a classic JRPG viewed from the side, with turn-based combat and Metroid-tier exploration and level progression. That's pretty much what you get with this bad boy. Now that it's out of Early Access, it's a safe recommendation for just about everyone!

Crusader Kings III

When it comes down to brass tacks, Crusader Kings III really isn't a grand strategy game. Certainly not when compared to other Paradox IPs such as Hearts of Iron and Europa Universalis. Instead, it's a large-scale RPG where instead of a single character, players take control over an entire lineage. Quite the scope, isn't it? In truth, CK3 is a bit like M0unt & Blade, except that it foregoes any concrete moment-to-moment gameplay in lieu of strategic decision-making and a more long-term gameplay loop. It's quite a different experience from virtually everything else on the market, and one of Paradox's best titles yet.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning

A full remaster of the 2012 action RPG that never got all the attention it truly deserved, Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning harkens back to a simpler time in more ways than one. In 2021, it's a strange combination of almost retro gameplay mechanics and a more modern development outlook. The weirdest thing, though, is that it works. The game is great fun if you take it at face value, and offers dozens of hours of content with promises of all-new expansion packs on the way. What's not to like?

Maneater

best-rpgs-2021-maneater

Yes: Maneater is an RPG, too. It's a smaller, more condensed sort of RPG, but an RPG nonetheless. What it does is pretty darn fresh, too, because we're not really aware of any other PC game where you get to eat people as a shark. You can't tell us that doesn't sound badass, right? And, much like Amalur, Maneater too will be getting some sort of an expansion pack further down the line. We'd be lying if we said we weren't excited to see where Tripwire takes us next, and what sort of horrific mutations they let us unlock.

Greedfall

A bit of a standout hit from Spiders, Greedfall is the first game from this French-based game dev studio that's gotten truly widespread appeal. Being an AA production, it never quite reaches the levels of polish you'd expect out of, say, an Elder Scrolls game, but that's not to say it's any worse for the wear. Quite the opposite, even: Greedfall has a special sort of charm to it that perfectly balances classic RPG traditions and novel game developments. In the end, Spiders delivered an action RPG they had been trying to make for a decade now. Their next project - Steelrising - is bound to be even better.

Elder Scrolls Online: Greymoor

What would this list be without at least one MMO gracing its proverbial pages? For that matter, what would this list be without an Elder Scrolls title? Thankfully, the long-lasting Elder Scrolls Online continues to be a phenomenal experience all around, and our favorite MMORPG, too. Its latest expansion - Greymoor - is slowly coming to a bombastic crescendo, but we've little doubt that Bethesda has another year of content ready for us to leap headfirst into. The bang-for-buck prospect of Greymoor is astonishing since it includes all the previous DLCs, and the fact that you can play most of the game solo-ish means it's got serious appeal for solo gamers, too.
