Though we're huge fans of single-player and RPG games on PC, there's something extraordinary about jumping into co-op multiplayer with friends, family, and/or pets and kicking about without so much as a care in the world!

That's precisely why we thought the time was right to set up an all-new, fully up-to-date list of the best co-op games to enjoy local and online multiplayer gameplay in! Certainly, our 2022 list of the best co-op games still works, but if you're looking for cutting-edge stuff, this is the place to be. It's a simple setup, too: we've got links to all the games and services featured here, so you can join forces with your co-op partner(s) in no time at all!

How to Choose the Right PC Co-Op Games?

One of the guiding features for the latest co-op games recommendation article is that we weren't going to rely on the community's own online co-op solutions times time around. Naturally, we're huge fans of the awesome Elden Ring and Skyrim multiplayer mods, but setting those up is far from ideal and hardly perfectly reliable.

No, the goal is to set you up with a comprehensive list of the best co-op games on PC that just work. Install, join up with your pals, and you're set to enjoy a great co-op game quickly, easily, and with minimum fuss. That's precisely what awaits below, so let us get to it!

Contra: Operation Galuga

  • Player Count: up to 4
  • Local Co-Op: yes

It's been too, too long. Finally, though, Contra is back, and it's back with a vengeance. Operation Galuga is a full-fledged reimagination of the classic Contra gameplay loop in a modern format. In local co-op, in particular, you're getting one of the best true arcade platformers we've seen in ages.

Don't Starve Together

  • Player Count: up to 6
  • Local Co-Op: no

One of the easiest recommendations on this list, Don't Starve Together is a phenomenally in-depth isometric survival game with a wacky, Schafer-esque undertone. A 10/10 on Steam, this open-world survival game has enjoyed a whopping seven years' worth of content updates, and it remains almost entirely unique even today.

It Takes Two

  • Player Count: 2
  • Local Co-Op: yes

Available via Game Pass Ultimate, EA's It Takes Two is a triumph of gameplay and storytelling that delivers an immersive and emotional story for two players joining up and playing co-op. It's the best co-op game on the market for those who need a strong narrative hook, and its variety and ease-of-access means anyone can jump in and play it.

Moving Out 2

  • Player Count: up to 4
  • Local Co-Op: yes

One of the more difficult co-op games on this list, even though you wouldn't think so looking at it! Moving Out 2 is an all-new follow-up to its predecessor that focuses on, simply, moving things around. Up to four players join up as moving company hires in the business of, well, moving people from one side of the town to another. Hijinks guaranteed.

Moving Out 2 is coming out on August 15!

World War Z

  • Player Count: up to 3
  • Local Co-Op: no

Another co-op triumph, World War Z is one of the most impressive survival game examples on the market, owing mainly to its handling of thousands-strong zombie hordes. It's good co-op fun that elevates itself beyond simple over-the-shoulder combat through strong gameplay mechanics and - and we cannot underline this feature hard enough - remarkably big zombie hordes.

Deep Rock Galactic

  • Player Count: up to 4
  • Local Co-Op: no

Deep Rock Galactic is one of the best co-op games of all time, easily, and that's not just because it's fun, accessible, and loaded with content! It's also because Deep Rock Galactic is a player-first game, developed with no fear-of-missing-out features of any sort. Simply log into the game and be ready to Rock and Stone!

Exoprimal

  • Player Count: up to 5
  • Local Co-Op: no

Capcom's latest experimental title comes in the form of Exoprimal, an always-online live-service co-op game with PvPvE gameplay. Basically, teams of up to five players duke it out against immense hordes of dinosaur monsters and one another! It's similar to World War Z in how it handles hordes, except with a dedicated sci-fi slant and a bit of Dino Crisis DNA.

Borderlands 3

  • Player Count: up to 4
  • Local Co-Op: no

If your co-op gang of up to four players needs an awesome new online co-op loot treadmill... well, there's absolutely nothing on the market that'll scratch the classic Borderlands itch. We recommend Borderlands 3, specifically, because it's got the best core gameplay loop the franchise has ever had. Do ignore the story, though.

Overcooked - All You Can Eat

  • Player Count: up to 4
  • Local Co-Op: yes

Another game in the vein of Moving Out, the All You Can Eat version of Overcooked unites both sequels into one of the best co-op games ever created. It's big, hard, and ridiculously fun, and most importantly, you've got offline co-op you can play on a single machine!

Risk of Rain 2

  • Player Count: up to 4
  • Local Co-Op: no

Risk of Rain 2, too, was always going to make it onto the new list of the best co-op games available via 2Game. Co-op play can get really complicated really quickly in rogue-lite titles, but ROR2 keeps things simple as a breeze throughout, the only problem being that it's one of the hardest survival games you could play. Still a delight, though!

Sea of Thieves

  • Player Count: up to 4
  • Local Co-Op: no

Another Game Pass offering, Sea of Thieves may have had a rough time early in its lifetime, but Xbox game studios have successfully turned things around. In 2023, Sea of Thieves offers a unique online co-op experience focusing on exploration and adventure, where cooperative play with up to three friends doesn't rely purely on combat to keep things interesting.

Six Days in Fallujah

  • Player Count: up to 4
  • Local Co-Op: no

One of the newest games on this list is the online co-op shooter Six Days in Fallujah. A dedicated PvE experience, SDIF is all about covering your co-op partners' back while clearing room after room, house after house - all proc-generated on the fly. It is a one-of-a-kind horror experience if you ask us.

Grand Theft Auto Online

  • Player Count: up to 30
  • Local Co-Op: no

Grand Theft Auto Online remains a delightful online co-op experience if you can stomach the game's age - and the fact that Rockstar is yet to officially announce a sequel. Still, it's a great choice to try out a different kind of cooperative play, where online co-op comes with PvP attached, and where other playgroups may well end up stealing your lunch!

Monster Hunter Rise + Sunbreak DLC

  • Player Count: up to 4
  • Local Co-Op: no

Though we do still believe Monster Hunter World is mechanically the superior game, Monster Hunter Rise excels with its online co-op systems and features. Light, easy-to-run, and fun, Rise with its Sunbreak DLC is the best co-op MH title we've seen yet, and a phenomenal choice to play online in co-op mode.
